Donald Trump Praised on Social Media the “Accelerated Pace” of Political Prisoner Releases in Venezuela Under Delcy Rodríguez, But Human Rights Groups and Families of Detainees Assert That Official Numbers Are Inflated.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated on his Truth Social network that Venezuela is “releasing its political prisoners at an accelerated pace,” and projected that this movement will increase in the coming weeks.
The statement was made on the same day that Venezuelan authorities reported numbers ranging from hundreds to over eight hundred released since before December 2025.
Trump directly thanked Venezuelan leaders, including interim president Delcy Rodríguez, for the “powerful humanitarian gesture,” in a message that mixes diplomatic praise with geopolitical pressure.

Official Numbers and Conflicting Versions About Releases
According to statements from the Venezuelan Interior Minister, Diosdado Cabello, 808 political prisoners have been released since before December.
However, human rights organizations and independent entities contest this data. The group Foro Penal, for example, verified only 383 releases since December, and 266 only after a public announcement made in January.
This disconnect between authorities and NGOs raises questions about the transparency of the process, especially since many family members continue to camp outside prisons waiting for news of their loved ones.
Trump’s announcement comes at a time of geopolitical tension between Washington and Caracas. Since the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces in early January, the Venezuelan leadership has reorganized under Rodríguez, who seeks to improve external relations while facing internal and international skepticism.
Independent groups stress that, despite some releases having actually occurred — including political activists, a human rights lawyer, and even a journalism student — hundreds of dissenters are still detained, which contradicts the narrative of rapid progress.
Criticism from NGOs and Families Points Out Contradictions
Members of human rights organizations state that the lists of released individuals do not match the records they maintain, and that many of those who were released still face questionable legal proceedings or restrictive measures.
Experts warn that reporting only isolated releases without deeper judicial reforms may signify little real advance in the protection of civil rights.
Do you think this acceleration in releases announced by Trump will translate into real and transparent freedom for political prisoners in Venezuela, or is it just a diplomatic trick?
