Used and Semi-New Car Sales Advance in Minas Driven by Automotive Credit and Demand for SUVs.
The automotive market in Minas Gerais started the year with significant growth in sales of semi-new and used vehicles.
In February, the state recorded an increase of 10.8% in the sale of semi-new cars, totaling 167,563 units sold, according to data from the National Federation of Associations of Automotive Vehicle Dealers (Fenauto).
The growth occurred throughout the state, especially in Belo Horizonte, and was mainly driven by the expansion of automotive credit, consumer confidence, and the search for more affordable alternatives in the sector.

The performance in Minas was well above the national average.
While Brazil recorded growth of only 1.7% in the sales of used and semi-new vehicles in February, Minas showed an expansion about six times greater, consolidating the state as one of the highlights in the automotive market at the beginning of 2026.
In the first two months combined, Minas Gerais has already totaled 318,788 semi-new and used cars sold, representing growth of 3.6% compared to the same period in 2025.
Semi-New Cars Lead Growth in the Automotive Market
The increase in vehicle sales is directly linked to the rise in demand for semi-new cars, considered a more economical alternative for consumers looking to change vehicles without facing the high prices of brand new models.
Among the most sold models in the state, three traditional vehicles continue to dominate the rankings. The Volkswagen Gol is in the lead, with 8,604 units sold, followed by the Fiat Palio, with 6,081 units, and the Fiat Uno, which registered 5,644 sales.
These models stand out for offering lower maintenance costs and greater presence in the used car market, factors that increase their liquidity and confidence among buyers.
Belo Horizonte Concentrates Growth in Vehicle Sales
In the state capital, the performance was even more significant. Vehicle sales grew 17.7% in February compared to January, demonstrating strong activity in the local semi-new car market.
In the last month alone, Belo Horizonte registered 43,559 vehicles sold, while the total for the first two months reached 80,570 units.
Among the best-selling models in the capital, the highlight was the Chevrolet Onix, with 1,618 units, followed by the Volkswagen Gol, with 1,519, and the Fiat Palio, with 1,464 vehicles sold.
Automotive Credit and Travel Help Boost Sales
Industry experts point out that several factors contributed to the growth of the automotive market in Minas. Among them, the increase in the availability of automotive credit, which has facilitated financing for semi-new cars and expanded consumer access to the market.
The Marketing and Planning Director of the Association of Vehicle Dealers of the State of Minas Gerais (Assovemg), Flávio Maia, states that the positive results surprised even the most optimistic analysts.
“We have also observed consumers trying out new technologies, such as hybrid and electric vehicles. With the arrival of these models in the semi-new market, access becomes easier and sparks interest among those wanting to learn about these technologies,” details the executive.
Additionally, the period of extended holidays may have also influenced the increase in demand.
According to Maia, many families have started to consider purchasing larger semi-new cars, especially SUVs, for travel.
The Reliability of Minas Consumers Attracts Buyers from Other States
Another differentiator pointed out by the sector is the positive reputation of the used car market in Minas Gerais across the country.
According to Flávio Maia, the credibility of transactions in the state has attracted buyers from other regions.
“We receive many clients from other states looking for the mineiro’s car. We sell to places like São Paulo and Brasília, largely due to the reliability that the market attributes to Minas consumers,” explains the executive.
The majority of purchases are concentrated on vehicles valued at up to R$ 60 thousand, a range considered strategic for those seeking affordability without sacrificing mobility.
Additionally, interest in SUVs, hybrid cars, and electric vehicles is increasing, a trend that is also starting to gain traction in the semi-new car segment.
The Automotive Market Could Set a New Record in 2026
Even with a challenging economic scenario, the sector’s expectation is for continued growth in vehicle sales throughout 2026.
Access to automotive credit, combined with the renewal of the semi-new car stock, is expected to continue stimulating the Brazilian automotive market.
“The appetite for credit is very high. We have noticed banks being more willing to finance, with greater ease in approving applications,” states Maia.
Thus, on a national level, February recorded 1.3 million used and semi-new vehicles sold, reinforcing the importance of this segment for the automotive sector.
Therefore, for the president of Assovemg, Glenio Junior, the numbers indicate a consistent growth trajectory.
“The results reinforce our confidence in a very promising 2026. February is a month with fewer business days, and yet we maintained a growth trajectory, with real conditions to set a new record,” he concludes.
