The duplication of one of the busiest stretches of the interior of São Paulo will transform regional mobility. The Washington Luís Highway will undergo major works in the coming months.

O Government of São Paulo announced the start of works to expand the Washington Luís Highway (SP-310), in the São José do Rio Preto region. The interventions will begin in April and will directly affect the municipalities of Cedral, São José do Rio Preto and Mirassol.

The planned investment is R$455 million. The execution will be carried out by the concessionaire Ecovias Noroeste Paulista, under the supervision of Artesp. forecast is that everything will be completed in the second half of 2027.

Marginal roads, third lane and new viaducts

The works package includes the construction of 15,8 km of marginal roads. These marginal roads will be implemented between km 436 and km 446, within the urban stretch of São José do Rio Preto. There will also be works at km 425, in Cedral, and near km 448, in Mirassol.

In addition, 26,3 km of third lane are planned. This new lane will be built between km 428 and 436 and also between km 444 and 452. For the most part, the third lane will be in the central reservation of the highway.

Another highlight is the complete remodeling of the junction with the Transbrasiliana Highway (BR-153). The project includes new access ramps and return viaducts. Access to São José do Rio Preto will also undergo improvements.

In total, 11 viaducts will be built on the stretch between Cedral and Mirassol. These structures should serve both the main traffic and the new marginal roads, organizing the flow and avoiding conflicts between local and long-distance vehicles.

Security and development

The State Secretary for Investment Partnerships, Rafael Benini, highlighted that the project will help resolve long-standing bottlenecks in the region. According to him, the project improves traffic flow and boosts regional development.

Another expected benefit is increased road safety. With the separation between urban and long-distance vehicles, the tendency is for accidents to decrease. The third lane should also reduce the risk of dangerous overtaking.

During the works, the concessionaire will implement signaling and traffic management measures. The idea is to maintain the flow of traffic in the lanes that are not affected. The population will be notified in advance of any closures.

Digital channels, local press and highway signage will be used to inform drivers and residents. The goal is to ensure safety and minimize disruptions during the construction work.

Expansion also in São Carlos

Ecovias Noroeste Paulista will also operate in the São Carlos region. Also in 2025, construction will begin on a third lane on the SP-310, between km 227,8 and 242,5. This work is scheduled for completion in April 2027.

With this, the government is expanding the presence of improvements in strategic sections of the highway. The focus continues to be on increasing the capacity of the road and making traffic safer and more efficient.

More investment in the road network

The São Paulo government has also announced new investments in other highways in the region. Ecovias Noroeste Paulista recently took over the management of 156 km of roads that were previously under the responsibility of the concessionaire TEBE.

Among the sections now under new management are parts of the Brigadeiro Faria Lima Highway (SP-326), Comendador Pedro Monteleone Highway (SP-351) and the José Della Vechia and Orlando Chesini Ometto highways (SP-323).

The improvements planned for these sections include the duplication of 55 km of SP-351 and the construction of seven new access devices on SP-323. There will also be adjustments to the SP-326 side roads, especially on the section that passes through Barretos.

Accessibility works are also planned, with the construction and requalification of pedestrian walkways. The aim is to facilitate safe movement at crossing points on highways.

Doubling by 2040

Another highlight presented by Secretary Rafael Benini was the duplication of the Laurentino Mascari Highway (SP-333), between Taquaritinga and Borborema. The section passes through Itápolis.

This work will be divided into two phases. The first will take place between 2025 and 2028. The second is scheduled to take place between 2037 and 2040. The objective is to prepare the region for the population and economic growth expected in the coming decades.
