In The Heart Of The Cerrado, A Municipality With Only 4,000 Inhabitants Is Becoming The New Destination For Global Mining. With One Of The Largest Emerald Deposits On The Planet, Campos Verdes Is Attracting China’s Interest And Experiencing An Unexpected Economic Boom.
For Decades, Campos Verdes, In Northern Goiás, Was Just Another Dot On The Map Of Rural Brazil. A Small, Isolated Town With Just Over A Thousand Inhabitants And Modest Infrastructure. But Everything Changed When One Of The Country’s Greatest Underground Treasures Came To Light: One Of The Largest Emerald Deposits In The World.
Today, With Only 4,005 Residents According To IBGE (2022), Campos Verdes Has Become An International Attraction Hub, Awakening Direct Interest From China And Generating Agreements That Promise To Completely Transform The Town’s Future. A Jump Of Almost 162% In Population In Just 5 Years Shows That The Boom Has Already Started.
The Hidden Wealth Beneath The Cerrado
Few People Know That The Subsoil Of Campos Verdes Holds Precious Stones Of Inestimable Value. They Are High-Quality Emeralds With Intense Coloration And Low Presence Of Impurities — Characteristics That Make Them Desirable Worldwide.
-
Rare earths are in everything, from cell phones to bullet trains, and what almost no one realizes is why they have become the target of such a delicate global war.
-
Brazil extracts 26.3 million tons of ore from what was previously treated as waste, transforming residues into wealth, producing over 3 million tons of sand, and demonstrating how national mining is relearning to generate value.
-
A $3.5 billion megaproject in Latin America pumps desalinated seawater at 1,050 liters per second over 194 km to keep a copper supermine in the Andes operational for another 20 years.
-
A hidden mine in the Andes valued at nearly R$ 1 trillion is starting to attract global attention, containing copper, gold, and silver, and raises an intriguing question: why do Argentina and Chile need to act together to exploit this gigantic wealth?
It Is Estimated That The Monthly Production Of The Deposit Varies Between 800 And 1,000 Kilograms Of Emeralds, Numbers That Place The Goiás Municipality Alongside Major Mineral Powers Like Zambia And Colombia. But What Makes Everything Even More Impressive Is The Potential For Expansion Of The Deposit, Considered To Be Underexplored.
It Is This Promise Of Almost Endless Wealth That Has Been Attracting International Investors — Especially From China, A Country That Dominates The Global Market For Cutting And Luxury Jewelry.
Chinese Investments And A New Technological Frontier
Starting In 2023, Campos Verdes Began Receiving Technical And Diplomatic Delegations From China, Interested Not Only In The Extraction Of Emeralds But Also In Creating A Complete Ecosystem For Production, Certification, And Export Of Jewelry.
One Milestone In This Approach Was The Cooperation Protocol Signed With Huaqiao University, A Reference In Gemology And Cutting. The Agreement Provides For The Installation Of A Cutting, Testing, And Analysis Laboratory In The Municipality, Expected To Generate Up To 600 Direct Jobs.
Additionally, There Are Negotiations With Chinese Companies To Set Up Processing And Certification Manufacturing Units In Brazil, Which Would Ensure Greater Added Value To Brazilian Stones And Allow For The Export Of Finished Jewelry — And Not Just Raw Materials.
This Complete Production Chain, If Consolidated, Could Transform Campos Verdes Into The First “Emerald Valley” In The Southern Hemisphere.
Population Growth And Changes In The Local Economy
The Arrival Of Investments And The Resumption Of Mining Activities Caused A Demographic And Economic Explosion. In 2017, Campos Verdes Had About 1,526 Inhabitants. By 2022, This Number Jumped To More Than 4,000, An Increase Of Over 160%.
The Local Commerce Gained Momentum. New Inns, Restaurants, Supply Stores, Specialized Mining Services, And Transportation Began To Emerge Frequently. The City Hall Started Investing In Professional Training, Preparing The Local Workforce For New Demands.
The Municipality, Previously Dependent On Federal Transfers, Is Starting To Rebuild Itself Based On An Increasingly Sophisticated Mineral Economy, Focused On Technology, Certification, And International Partnerships.
Sustainability And Challenges Of Rapid Growth
Despite The Euphoria, Experts Warn: Growing Too Quickly Can Be A Problem If There Is No Urban, Environmental, And Social Planning. Today, Campos Verdes Faces The Challenge Of Maintaining Its Pace Without Losing Control.
The City Hall Claims To Be Implementing Urban Zoning Plans, Restructuring The Electric Network, Improving Water Capture, And Expanding Health And Education Services. The Goal Is To Avoid The Mistakes Made In Other Mining Towns That Grew Without Structure And Later Collapsed.
Another Focus Is On Environmental Regulation And Sustainable Mining. With The Support Of Universities And International Institutions, The Municipality Aims To Ensure That The Exploitation Of Emeralds Is Done Responsibly, With Recovery Of Degraded Areas, Traceability Of Stones, And Combatting Illegal Mining.
A Future That Has Already Started To Shine
Campos Verdes Is Experiencing A Rare Moment. With The Eyes Of The World Turned Toward Its Deposit, The City Can Choose Between Repeating The Mistakes Of The Past Or Leading A New Model Of Mineral Development — More Inclusive, Technological, And Sustainable.
The Interest From China Shows That Brazil Has Much To Offer Beyond Soy, Iron Ore, And Oil. Goiás Emeralds Are More Than A Resource: They Are An Opportunity To Reposition The Country As A Global Player In The Fine Gem And Jewelry Design Market.
And If It Depends On The Shine Of These Stones And The Local Effort To Structure Growth, Campos Verdes Is About To Become Much More Than The “Emerald City” — But Also A Symbol Of How Small Towns Can Change Their Own Destiny.
