With the Capacity to Manufacture a Car Every 10 Seconds, Hyundai’s Plant in Ulsan Has Turned into an Industrial City That Exports Vehicles to All Continents
Imagine a place that produces a car every few seconds, operates non-stop all year round, and still exports to all continents. No, we are not talking about China — although it may seem so. The largest car factory in the world, in terms of annual production, is indeed in South Korea. More precisely in Ulsan, where Hyundai has built a true empire on wheels.
The main facility of the South Korean group covers an area of over 5 million square meters, something so gigantic that it surpasses the territory of countries like Monaco and Vatican City combined. From there, 1.5 million cars are produced every year, and that number is set to grow: with the new electric models scheduled for 2026, production is expected to rise to 1.7 million units.
A City That Breathes Engines
It is not an exaggeration to say that this factory functions as an independent city. There are over 32,000 workers operating in the complex, which encompasses everything from steel casting to the final assembly of cars. Hyundai takes the concept of vertical integration to the extreme: within the same area, engines, transmissions, metal sheets, and electronic components are produced — all without relying on external suppliers.

China retires the J-7 fighter after years of military protection and can now transform military items into drones, following more than 60 years of operation of the J-7, derived from the MiG-21, with thousands of units produced and strategic use in the PLAAF and PLANAF.

Volunteers are sought to live in the mountains for a month: a study pays people to stay at 2,500 meters, with 24-hour monitoring of sleep, metabolism, and blood pressure.
And it doesn’t stop there. Instead of a line for each model, the Ulsan plant operates with a system of versatile assembly lines, capable of manufacturing up to 17 different models simultaneously. Entry models, hybrids, SUVs, electric vehicles, and even the luxury division Genesis share space on the assembly lines, which operate with high flexibility and precision. According to data from Hyundai itself, a new car rolls off the production line every 10 seconds.

Logistics Designed to Export to the Whole World
The location of the plant was not chosen by chance. It is by the sea, facing the Pacific Ocean, allowing direct connection to the port of Ulsan. Every day, three large Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) ships leave loaded with finished vehicles, heading to dealerships around the planet. These ships — an important detail — are also built by another division of Hyundai, Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world’s leading shipbuilder.
Each vessel carries between 3,000 and 5,000 cars, and about 80% of total production is destined for export. The factory yards have the capacity to store thousands of units, and automated systems sort each vehicle according to its destination country. It’s a military-paced operation: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Ulsan vs. Wolfsburg vs. BYD: Who Dominates the Ranking?
It is natural to think that China or Germany would dominate the list of the largest factories in the world. However, in terms of quantity of vehicles produced, Ulsan still leads. The Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg, for example, covers 6.5 km² — larger in area — but produces around 855,000 cars per year, nearly half of Ulsan’s production.
As for BYD, in China, it is a curious case: the automaker has a mega-structure in Zhengzhou covering 130 km², but still does not reach Hyundai’s volumes. This is partly due to the production still focused on the expansion of electric models and the export bottlenecks faced by some Chinese manufacturers.
In addition, Hyundai has the advantage of mastering the entire logistics chain, from steel to ship, which gives the company unique control and agility — and explains how it manages to maintain such a level of production without interruptions.
And the Future? More Electrics and More Autonomy
With the global transition to cleaner vehicles, Hyundai is already adapting part of the Ulsan lines to increase the manufacturing of 100% electric models, such as the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. The company’s expectation is that the factory will start producing at least 200,000 additional electric vehicles per year by 2026, focusing primarily on serving Europe, North America, and Japan.
The plant is also incorporating autonomous robots, artificial intelligence, and digital twins into the production process — technologies that place Ulsan at the forefront of what is called Industry 4.0. The factory was one of the first to adopt the concept of a “digital smart factory”.
A Showcase of South Korea to the World
Hyundai transformed what was a shipyard in 1968 into a showcase of South Korean technological power. The Ulsan factory not only helps position Hyundai as one of the largest automakers in the world but also represents South Korea’s ability to lead in strategic sectors — automotive, naval, and energy.
Today, more than just an industrial plant, Ulsan symbolizes efficiency, integration, and boldness. And by all indications, it will continue to accelerate even more in the coming years.
