Project Located in the Municipality of Vera is Proof That the Biodiesel Sector Continues to Attract Investments Despite the Lag

The company 3tentos has roots in Rio Grande do Sul, but recently has been targeting investments in the Midwest to expand its activities and solidify its brand as a distributor of agricultural inputs nationwide. The company is building a new biodiesel plant in the municipality of Vera, in Mato Grosso. This will be the company’s second biodiesel production unit. Its debut in this market occurred in 2013 with the inauguration of the plant in Ijuí, in Rio Grande do Sul.

The expansion plans of 3tentos in the biodiesel market include opening 8 stores and one industrial unit over the next five years in Mato Grosso. This will be possible because the company has raised good capital in the financial market. The group’s shares debuted on the Novo Mercado of B3 in July 2021. Approximately R$ 1.35 billion was raised.

In 2020, 3Tentos was already achieving a revenue of R$ 3.11 billion, with a profit of R$ 246.3 million. In 2021, the products and services sold by the company generated revenues of nearly R$ 5.34 billion. The expectation is that the new 3tentos plant in Vera will have the capacity to produce up to 306 thousand m³ of biodiesel per year. The same as the plant in Ijuí, which produced a total of 200.2 thousand m³ of biodiesel in 2021.

3tentos was founded in 1995 in Santa Bárbara do Sul (RS) with seed production and the development of defensive and fertilizer businesses; reception, storage, and trade of grains. By 2025, the company intends to continue making investments, expanding in the Midwest by opening another 30 stores. Currently, it ranks 55th among the 100 largest agribusiness companies in Brazil, according to the Forbes Agro List.

Current Biodiesel Production Numbers in Brazil: Southern Region is the Top Producer

According to data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP), the Southern region produced 223,237 cubic meters of biofuels in March 2022. The Central-West region was able to produce 195,719 during the same period. The Northeast and Southeast produced 43,670 and 34,804 respectively. Totaling over 497m³ in March.

In 2022 (from January to March), almost 1.5 million m³ was produced in Brazil. In the same period of 2021, production was 1.6 million cubic meters. In January of this year, the ANP reported that contracts between fuel distributors and biodiesel producers totaled 1.3 billion liters of the product for supply in the first two months of the year. The contracted volume was about 50% higher than the estimated biodiesel demand for the period and aimed to meet the mandatory blending percentage with diesel.

According to data provided by the Center for Applied Economic Studies of the University of São Paulo (Cepea-USP) in partnership with the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries (Abiove), the production of biodiesel in Brazil generated nearly 20,000 direct jobs just last year.
