In 2021, National Biodiesel Production Generated Thousands of Direct and Indirect Jobs, Boosting the GDP of this Sector in Brazil
According to data provided by the Center for Applied Economic Studies at the University of São Paulo (Cepea-USP) in partnership with the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries (Abiove), biodiesel production in Brazil generated nearly 20,000 direct jobs in just the last year. The unprecedented partnership between the two organizations will conduct quarterly surveys on GDP generation, jobs, and foreign trade connected to the activities of the soybean and biodiesel chain.
According to the original article published by CNN Brasil, research conducted by the two institutions shows that only 3% of this total were unable to find formal employment, as 97% secured jobs in the biodiesel sector with registered contracts and salaries 16% higher than the average recorded in the agroindustry, which faces challenges in finding specialized labor.
Jobs and Sector Development
The generation of biodiesel shows significant relationships with activities that are major job providers. In this regard, it is estimated that for every R$ 1 increase in biodiesel production activity in Brazil, 33 jobs are added to the economy as a whole.

Furthermore, another noteworthy aspect is that a substantial portion of these jobs generated in the biodiesel industry occurs outside of major urban centers, which helps to develop the economy in smaller cities and municipalities located in the interior of Brazil.
Still according to the research data from São Paulo, the gross domestic product (GDP) generated by biodiesel production totaled 10.5 billion reais (R$ 10.5 billion). This value, along with the jobs provided, doubles when considering other activities and services that are involved in ensuring that biodiesel produced in Brazil actually reaches the final consumer.

Unprecedented in Brazil, In Line with Global and National Decarbonization Demands, Biodiesel Will Be Tested in Maritime Transport This Year
In line with global and national decarbonization demands, Bunker One, a world leader in the supply of fuels (bunker) and lubricants for navigation, is investing in the development of a new category of maritime fuel in Brazil. The company has partnered with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) to study the feasibility of adding 7% biodiesel to marine diesel.
The expectation is that, within eight months, results confirming this feasibility will be presented and that they can contribute to the creation of a sustainable public policy for the shipping industry. The project’s goal is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to harness the potential of this renewable energy source in Brazil, which is the second largest biodiesel producer in the world.
