Aneel Measure – National Electric Energy Agency
According to Aneel, the measure does not exempt consumers from paying their electricity bill, but aims to ensure the continuous supply of electricity to those who cannot pay their bills during a pandemic.
It also applies to families living in regions where there are no functioning collection points, such as lottery houses and financial institutions, due to social isolation restrictions.

The social tariff is a public policy that grants discounts on electricity bills for low-income families. It works through a discount on the monthly electricity bill, which varies according to the consumption scale, says Aneel.
The mechanism approved by Aneel is similar to the one adopted last year. The prohibition at that time was broader and applied to all consumers in the country. The rapporteur of the process, director Sandoval Feitosa, highlighted the worsening trend of the pandemic, but explained that there are currently no legal instruments that can take broader measures.
Sandoval Feitosa says, “It is not about exempting consumers from paying for the electricity service, but about ensuring the continuity of supply to those who, at this moment of pandemic, cannot pay their bill.”
