The Idea of Transforming the Old Shipyard into a Fishing Hub Came After the RJ Government Took Possession of the Site
The Government of Rio de Janeiro acquired, on Wednesday, 11/30, the area of the old Caneco shipyard, located in the Caju neighborhood in the port zone of the capital of RJ, where it will, in time, be the so-called fishing hub of the state.
“As of this date, the area of 135 thousand square meters will be the property of the State of RJ. After more than 30 years of a tiring attempt to purchase, the state’s fishermen will again have a place to call their own and can envision a better future. With that, we will be benefiting a fundamental sector for the state’s economy,” says RJ government member Claudio Castro.
The estimate is that the installation envisioned by the RJ government in the auction area for movement will be for the storage and commercialization of fish catches, ice manufacturing units, boat workshops, and training courses, among other facilities for the sector.

Largest Fishing Hub in Brazil
According to the Secretary of Economic Development, Cássio Coelho, when the fishing hub is operational, it will hold the title of the largest and most modern enterprise of its kind in Brazil, marking a landmark for the consolidation and development of productive chains related to the maritime economy, in addition to generating various job and income opportunities for the state.
“Very soon we will be inaugurating our master plan, the business model, and the execution schedule of the project. In the coming weeks, we will request environmental authorization from Inea to begin, in January, the cleaning of the land,” says Cássio Coelho.
In addition to construction on-site, the Nautical Hub Pesqueiro will host several areas for docking vessels, storing products, and also selling fish, ice manufacturing and storage, boat workshops, and docking facilities. The expectation is that the fishing hub and commercialization of products will begin in 2023.
Project Development by the RJ Government
The development of the new fishing hub construction is being carried out by the State Secretariat for Economic Development, Energy, and International Relations (Sedeeri) in conjunction with numerous involved sectors.
With the aim of improving the qualification of labor, the Department of Economic Development signed a partnership with the Naval Technological Cluster to promote professional training courses for residents of the surrounding communities of the hub area. The objective is to train a specialized workforce in the fishing market and maritime economy, to be utilized in the very complex where the shipyard used to operate.
