Couple Over 80 Lives in Isolation in the Amazon Forest, Without Electricity, and Produces Their Own Food

In the Amazon rainforest, far from any urban center, Mr. Antônio, 83, and Mrs. Zenaide, 78, live a routine that catches attention for its simplicity and resilience. The couple resides in a simple house, with no access to electricity and basic services, relying almost exclusively on their own work to survive.

Even at their advanced age, both maintain an active life, marked by cultivating the land, raising animals, and utilizing the natural resources available in the region where they live.

Isolated Life Without Access to Electricity

The area where the couple lives has no electricity, running water, or urban infrastructure. Everything is done manually, from household chores to work in the fields.

To ensure water for consumption, Mr. Antônio dug a well by hand, using simple tools. At night, before the recent arrival of solar energy, lighting came only from lamps, which limited activities after dark.

Isolation is part of the routine and requires constant adaptation to the conditions of the forest.

Own Production Guarantees Family Sustenance

A large portion of the food consumed by the couple comes directly from their farm. They grow rice, beans, corn, manioc, and other products, in addition to raising chickens for their own consumption.

The rice, for example, goes through a completely artisanal process: it is harvested, dried, and prepared by hand before being consumed. The same happens with other foods, which ensure food autonomy even far from markets and shops.

Despite the difficulties, such as losses caused by birds and the physical limitations imposed by age, the couple continues to produce their own sustenance.

Farming Continues Even After 80

Even at 83 years old, Mr. Antônio continues to take care of the crops, clearing the land and performing activities that require daily physical effort. Mrs. Zenaide also actively participates in the routine, helping with food preparation and daily tasks.

In addition to agricultural work, Mr. Antônio also crafts fishing nets by hand, following knowledge passed down from generation to generation.

The couple’s willingness is noteworthy and contrasts with urban reality, where many tasks are already fully mechanized.

Solar Energy Changes Routine in the Forest

Recently, the couple’s routine underwent an important change with the arrival of a portable solar energy system. The equipment allows for energy storage and powers lamps and basic tools.

With solar energy, nighttime activities became safer, and small tasks started being carried out more easily. This innovation represents a significant advancement in quality of life, even without altering the simplicity of their way of living.

A Way of Life Increasingly Rare in Brazil

The story of Mr. Antônio and Mrs. Zenaide reveals the reality of families that still live connected to the land, producing their own food and facing isolation with work and resilience.

Even in the face of advanced age and the limitations imposed by life away from the cities, the couple maintains a routine based on autonomy, simplicity, and daily effort — a portrait of a Brazil little seen but still existing.
