The Governments of Maranhão and Ceará Promise to Provide the Population with Aid for Buying Cooking Gas, Known as Vale-gás, Soon After the 5.9% Increase on the Product Announced by Petrobras
In light of the worsening crisis brought about by the coronavirus in the country, the price of cooking gas has risen considerably, but thanks to the vale-gás in Ceará and Maranhão, some consumers are managing to alleviate the high price of cooking gas announced by Petrobras. Depending on the region, consumers are spending around R$ 120 for each refill. To mitigate the impact of the increase announced by Petrobras, Ceará and Maranhão are now granting the vale-gás, which provides the population with assistance to buy cooking gas.

Vale-gás in Ceará
For those residing in Ceará, the state government created the social vale-gás, which has been granted in two rounds and managed by the Cras of Fortaleza. To distribute the aid for cooking gas, the population of Ceará in vulnerable situations was first screened to assist those in need.
Seventeen thousand families with an individual income of R$ 89.34 benefited from the program. When delivering the empty gas cylinder, it was refilled and returned to the citizen. So far, there is no forecast for the release of the vale-gás in June for Ceará, under the assumption that there will be another round next month.

Cooking Gas Assistance in Maranhão
In Maranhão, the state government has started to release aid for cooking gas considering the impacts of the pandemic and the Petrobras announcement. The program has been coordinated by the Social Development Secretariat (Sedes), providing benefits to approximately 119,000 families throughout the state. Only in the capital of Maranhão, São Luís, the average is around 15,000 beneficiaries.
Those who wish to access the vale-gás must wait for the government’s screening process, also conducted based on CadÚnico data.
According to Márcio Honaiser, Secretary of Sedes, the action aims to guarantee the right to food for the most socioeconomically vulnerable. He explains that during this pandemic moment, it is crucial to maintain actions targeted at this group.
Petrobras Announces Increase in the Price of Cooking Gas
On last Friday (11), Petrobras announced that the price of cooking gas will increase by 5.9%, and starting last Monday (14), the new price will come into effect.
This percentage represents an average of R$ 0.19 per kg. Also on the same day, Petrobras announced that gasoline would decrease by 2% at refineries, which would take effect on Saturday; however, diesel did not see any price change.
In a statement, Petrobras made it clear that the changes arriving at refineries are different from those received by consumers at retail. This occurs because cooking gas is subject to state and federal taxation until it reaches the consumer. Additionally, other costs are also attributed.
