Azul, The Brazilian Airline, Plans To Buy Flying Cars From German Lilium, And The Deal Could Reach Up To US$ 1 Billion. The Estimate Is That The 220 Cars Will Start Their Operations In 2025

Azul signed a letter of intent with the German company Lilium to form an exclusive fleet of flying electric cars in Brazil. The deal could be worth up to US$ 1 billion (about R$ 5 billion in direct conversion) and includes a fleet of 220 flying cars known as eVTOLs, which will start their operations in 2025. The terms for the vehicle order will still need to be finalized between both parties.

Through this potential fleet of flying cars, Azul intends to increase connectivity in Brazil. According to the airline, the partnership reinforces Azul’s strategy to boost its ESG commitments (environmental, social, and governance), through 100% electric flying cars with zero carbon emissions.

Lilium is seen as one of the most promising creators of flying cars, and its aircraft has a cabin for six people, which already presents a differentiator compared to other companies that can only accommodate four. It will also have a range of 250 km, while its competitors are expected to offer services with shorter distances.

Strategic Investor Of Lilium Speaks Out

The investor and strategic director of the company, Alexander Asseily, analyzes Brazil as a strong market for Lilium. According to the director, the company is studying the Brazilian helicopter market more closely, which is one of the largest in the world.

Lilium can make this transport a more accessible reality in Brazil, not only for those who already use air taxis but also to reach a larger group. The company is at the forefront of the certification process in Europe, and in 2020, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) granted the company’s flying car project the first necessary documents for their cars to take flight.

In 2021, Lilium announced its partnership with Spac Quell, led by Barry Engle, former president of GM in North America, and in June, it stated that Thomas Enders, director of Airbus from 2005 to 2019, will become chairman of the company’s board once the merger process is finalized.

Meet The Involved Companies

As one of the fastest-growing airlines in Brazil since it began operations in 2008, Azul currently has the largest airline fleet in Brazil and serves over 100 destinations with 792 departures per day.

In addition, the company has expanded its operations with direct flights to countries such as the USA and Portugal, operating A330 aircraft equipped with a technological in-flight entertainment system and meals made for Business and Economy classes.

Lilium Air Mobility is a company that was founded in 2015 and is now present in over 50 countries, with 4 offices around the world. The company has 600 employees with some of the brightest minds in the aerospace industry, a dream team from diverse backgrounds and talents.
