BYD King Arrived Recently and Is Already Dominating the Sedan Segment. Chinese Model Has Major Differentiators and Leaves Rival Toyota Corolla in the Dust.

When the Chinese automaker BYD launched the BYD King in the Brazilian automotive market, it was clear that its main competitor would be the Toyota Corolla Altis. In July, just the second month of the sedan in the market, the BYD King already surpassed its competitor in sales numbers. In total, 593 units were sold, with 571 of the GS version and 22 of the GL version.

The Toyota Corolla Altis hybrid recorded 348 registered units. The sedan is sold in two versions, namely the Altis, priced at R$ 187.790, and Altis Premium, sold for R$ 198.890, just like the BYD King in GL (R$ 175.800) and GS (R$ 187.800) versions. It is important to mention that the BYD King only competes against the hybrid version of the Toyota Corolla so far, which is not a plug-in hybrid like the Chinese model.

The Toyota Corolla hybrid is currently what we call a full hybrid (HEV). In this configuration, the sedan features a 1.8 aspirated flex combustion engine with 101 horsepower and 14.5 kgfm of torque, combined with a 72 hp electric motor, which is powered by a 1.3 kWh battery. This battery does not require external recharging but does not offer minimum autonomy in electric mode.

On the other hand, the BYD King is known as PHEV, as it is a vehicle that features a hybrid system that requires external charging for its 8.3 kWh and 18.3 kWh batteries, providing 32 km and 80 km of autonomy in GL and GS versions, respectively.

The Chinese sedan, in its more expensive GS version, is equipped with a 1.5 gasoline engine with 110 hp, combined with an electric system, one motor as a generator and another as traction. Together, they can deliver up to 235 hp of power.

The basic version can reach 209 hp. Operating with the hybrid system, the BYD King can achieve 26 km/l. However, according to Inmetro, without the assistance of the electric system, the situation changes for the rival of the Toyota Corolla.

The King GL can reach 16.8 km/l in the city and 14.7 km/l on the highway using gasoline. The GS version achieves 16.3 km/l in the city and 14.3 km/l on the road. Meanwhile, the rival Toyota Corolla Altis and Altis Premium can achieve 12.8 km/l in the city and 11.1 km/l on the highway using ethanol, and 18.55 km/l in the city and 15.7 km/l on the highway using gasoline.

The Toyota Corolla has a fuel tank of 43 liters, ensuring a range of up to 795 km with one fill-up, while the King has a 48-liter tank and offers up to 806 km with just one tank.

Talking about the size of the model, the BYD King measures 4,780 mm in length, 1,840 mm in width, 1,490 mm in height, and 2,710 mm in wheelbase, figures quite similar to its Japanese rival.

In terms of design, the sedan has a much sportier stance than the Toyota Corolla. At the front, the headlights are very sharp and feature an LED strip connecting the pair, similar to what is seen in the BYD Dolphin. At the back, the sedan also has an LED strip connecting the taillights.

Inside the vehicle, the seats are in light tones, there is ambient LED lighting and a transmission position selector, as well as a 15.6-inch rotating multimedia screen and an 8.8-inch digital cluster.
