Heineken Has Started Using 100% Renewable Energy in Its Production and Wants to Bring the Program to Bars and Points of Sale

Heineken’s partner bars and points of sale will gain a significant benefit from the brewery: cheaper, greener energy. The company will make available 100 MW of distributed renewable energy generation, solar and wind, for establishments in 19 capitals across the country. The company assures that no type of adaptation is needed, nor will it require installing equipment, spending on solar panels, or paying any fees. Renewable Energy Project of the Brewery

The commitment was made by the beer brand, and follows the line of changes the company has been adopting to reduce its environmental impact. In December 2020, Heineken announced it would use 100% renewable energy in its entire production process.

The action between Heineken and partner bars and restaurants will only facilitate access for points of sale with sources of green energy generation. To do this, the establishment will need to register on a digital platform where the connection between both parties will occur.

Once the bar and green energy supplier establish contact, the electricity will continue to come in the same way, with no additional costs to the entrepreneur. It will not be necessary to make any type of adaptation to the electrical system of the place. According to Heineken’s announcement, bars and points of sale can achieve a reduction of up to 40% on their energy bills. Participation is free, with no registration fees, no loyalty fees, and no installation fees.

Heineken’s Production with 100% Renewable Energy

Gabriel D’Angelo Braz, the company’s marketing director, reminds that the company started using 100% renewable energy in its breweries last year and will now bring this energy to bars to generate a greater positive impact on the environment. The goal is to reach 50% of Heineken’s partner bars in 19 capitals by 2030. Currently, the company is in the pilot phase of the project in the capitals of Paraná, Mato Grosso, and Minas Gerais, but by early 2021 it will have the program rolling across Brazil.

Heineken was granted a temporary injunction by the Court of Minas Gerais to resume construction of its brewery in Pedro Leopoldo, near Belo Horizonte. In September, construction had been halted by ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation) due to the risk of damage to an archaeological site, where the skull of Luzia, the oldest human fossil found in the Americas, was located.

The injunction for the release to continue the construction of the factory was granted on Wednesday morning (06/10) by the 12th Federal Civil and Agrarian Court of SJMG (Judiciary Section of Minas Gerais), following a security mandate filed by the brewery.

In the decision, Judge Mário de Paula Franco Júnior understood that ICMBio does not have the authority to discuss the granting of the environmental license which had been granted by Semad (State Secretary for the Environment of Minas Gerais) in August 2021. When the embargo occurred, the agency stated that it found no obstacles to granting authorization. The judge also stated that Heineken has complied with all procedures and has an environmental license issued by a competent agency to construct the factory on site. Therefore, the company would have the right to execute the work.
