Canaltech Highlights Items For Chevrolet Montana To Win Comparison With Fiat Toro: Hybrid Engines, Load Capacity, Activ Version, uConnect Center.
The Chevrolet Montana was launched with the idea of being an essentially urban pickup truck. However, General Motors’ mission was quite challenging when we think about sales and market: to compete with Fiat pickups that dominate this segment: Strada and, mainly, the Toro, with similar size and customer profile.

5 Reasons To Buy The Fiat Toro 2022
If we think of the product idea, both Montana and Toro could capture the same market share. It is rare for someone to buy the Italian truck for work, even though in its turbodiesel versions it has, for example, all-wheel drive and a load capacity of one ton.

Chevrolet Montana vs. Fiat Toro: The Clash Of The Pickup Trucks
So, why does the Toro continue to outpace the Montana in sales? What can the Chevrolet intermediate pickup do to, in a future update, surpass its Italian rival? We have gathered some ideas and suggestions that may work.
Electrification Plan: The Differentiator For Chevrolet Montana
Something that can help the Chevrolet Montana in a clash with the Fiat Toro is leading with electrification plans. Recently GM stated that it is working on hybrid engines for Brazil, something that Stellantis is also doing. Getting ahead with a truly advantageous engine could give Montana a better standing in the fight with Toro.
More Variant Options And Load Capacity: The Challenge For Chevrolet Montana
Although it already has a cheaper variant with manual transmission geared towards work, Chevrolet has yet to commercially develop this possible side of Montana well. One suggestion could be to launch an even cheaper variant, but with structural reinforcements and more load capacity, one of the weak points of this project. Compared to the Toro’s turboflex versions, Montana falls short in load capacity. While the Italian can carry up to 680kg, the American only handles 600kg, not to mention towing, which is prohibited in Montana, while the Toro can tow up to 400kg without brakes. Even the turboflex Toro can handle terrains that Montana cannot. The Italian pickup has a more robust platform and the independent suspension on all four wheels makes it more capable for all types of terrain, in addition to making it more comfortable for daily use.
Technological Innovations: The Message From Chevrolet Montana
A pickup truck in Brazil is synonymous with a robust vehicle and Montana somewhat misses this message. Perhaps the way forward could be to invest in improvements in this regard and perhaps bring a version ‘Activ’, as has already happened with the Onix and the Spin, but with greater off-road capability. One of the biggest oversights of the Chevrolet Montana is coming without the ADAS package, at least at the same level we saw in the Tracker. The truck only has blind spot alert and falls short on features like, for example, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning, things that exist in the Toro. In terms of connectivity, both pickups perform well, but the Fiat ecosystem is superior to GM’s, partly because it is newer and more modern. The Toro’s uConnect center has a better resolution screen and faster interface, for instance. GM could, in a model refresh, implement a new infotainment system in the Montana. That would be nice.
More Powerful Version: The New Proposal For Chevrolet Montana
The Chevrolet Montana runs well and is pleasant both in the city and on the highway. But a version with a stronger engine could appeal to the market and make this pickup an interesting option against the more expensive variants of the Toro. The 1.4 turbo engine with 153hp that equips the Cruze, for example, could be an alternative, with adjustments to meet the Proconve L7. However, a new hybrid version, as mentioned, but with more power and efficiency, would help significantly in this competition. It is worth noting, however, that the Toro has a 1.3 turbo engine with 185hp in its entry-level versions, but in terms of behavior, the Montana is a bit quicker. An even more capable variant of GMC’s pickup could make things more difficult for the Italian truck.
