The Toyota Sedan Maintains A Significant Advantage Over Rivals In September 2025 And Reinforces Brazilians’ Preference For Efficiency, Technology And Reliability, Even Amid The Rise Of SUVs And The Dispute Between Hybrids And Electrics.

The Toyota Corolla maintained its lead among mid-size sedans in Brazil in September 2025.

There were 3,121 units sold, equivalent to about 59% market share in a segment that totaled 5,288 cars in the month.

Next were the BYD King (1,001), the Nissan Sentra (310), and the Audi A5 (281), with the BYD Seal (265) close behind.

The numbers confirm the margin of the sedan from Toyota even with the growing pressure from SUVs on the three-volume models.

Sales Table — Top Selling Mid-Size Sedans In September 2025

| Position | Model | Sales (units) |

| 2nd | BYD King | 1,001 |
| 3rd | Nissan Sentra | 310 |
| 4th | Audi A5 | 281 |
| 5th | BYD Seal | 265 |
| 6th | Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 | 95 |
| 7th | Honda Civic | 72 |

What Explains The Corolla’s Advantage Among Mid-Size Sedans

Besides the extensive network and resale value, the efficiency of the hybrid system is a significant advantage.

The hybrid family of the Corolla — the focus of the version known here as Corolla Plus — combines a 1.8 flex engine with two electric motors, totaling 122 hp of combined power, a solution that prioritizes low fuel consumption, especially in urban use.

Official data from PBEV/Inmetro indicates 17.5 km/l in the city and 15.2 km/l on the highway using gasoline.
With ethanol, it achieves 12.5 km/l (urban) and 10.7 km/l (highway).

In independent measurements, there have been reports of over 20 km/l in urban stretches with gasoline, a scenario possible with economical driving and favorable traffic conditions.

Mechanical System And Dynamic Tuning

The hybrid powertrain operates with a planetary gear e-CVT transmission, prioritizing smoothness and efficiency.

The TNGA platform maintains independent suspension on all four wheels — McPherson in the front and multi-link in the rear — which enhances stability in curves without sacrificing everyday comfort.

These solutions remain as technical differentiators in direct comparison with rivals.

Digital Dashboard, Multimedia And Connectivity

The 2025 line of the Corolla received connectivity and content upgrades.

The sedan offers a 12.3” digital instrument panel in the higher versions and the Toyota Play 2.0 central unit with a 10.1” screen and wired Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, as well as a wireless charger and dual-zone digital air conditioning.

This package contributes to the perception of a more technological interior, an area where direct competitors still vary in offering depending on the version.

Active Safety And Toyota Safety Sense Package

The Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) continues to be a cornerstone of the model, encompassing adaptive cruise control (ACC) with stop-and-go function, lane-keeping and centering assist, pre-collision system with autonomous braking, and automatic high beams.

For 2025, the brand announced improvements in the ACC’s operation at all speeds, reinforcing the driver assistance package.

Rivalry: BYD King Grows, Sentra Resists, And Audi Appears

Among the competitors, the BYD King solidified its second place with 1,001 registrations, supported by its technological appeal and hybrid powertrain, but still far behind in volume.

The Nissan Sentra closed the podium with 310 units.

Premium models, such as the Audi A5 (281 cars) and the BYD Seal (265), also appear in the Fenabrave ranking for the mid-size sedans, indicating a more diverse mix at the top, although at much lower levels than the Corolla.

Sales Table — Top Selling Compact Sedans In September 2025

| Position | Model | Sales (units) |
| 1st | Chevrolet Onix Plus | 5,169 |
| 2nd | Hyundai HB20S | 3,883 |
| 3rd | Volkswagen Virtus | 2,973 |
| 4th | Fiat Cronos | 1,606 |
| 5th | Honda City | 1,453 |
| 6th | Nissan Versa | 628 |

Compact Sedans Keep A Strong Pace

While the mid-size sedans advanced discreetly over August, the compact sedans totaled 15,722 registrations in September.

The Chevrolet Onix Plus led with 5,169 units, followed by Hyundai HB20S (3,883) and Volkswagen Virtus (2,973).

Also noteworthy were the Fiat Cronos (1,606), Honda City (1,453), and Nissan Versa (628).

The vitality of the compact segment contrasts with the more subdued pace of the mid-size sedans and reinforces the competition over price and cost of ownership.

Industrial Impact And Return To Production

Even with the sales lead, Toyota faced an operational challenge at the end of September.

A storm damaged the engine factory in Porto Feliz (SP), leading to the temporary suspension of production at the Sorocaba and Indaiatuba units.

The automaker announced a gradual resumption starting November 3 with imported engines, prioritizing the Corolla and Corolla Cross hybrids, while the São Paulo plant remains under evaluation.

This incident may affect short-term deliveries, but the import strategy aims to mitigate the impact on supply.

In the September breakdown, the Corolla increased from 2,890 to 3,121 units and maintained a wide lead over its rivals.

The month’s reading confirms that the combination of hybrid flexibility, active safety package, and connectivity sustains the model’s leadership in a segment where portfolio renewal is advancing but still does not threaten its hegemony.

It remains to be seen how the production pace after the factory interruption and the arrival of new hybrids may alter the market balance in the coming months.

If the demand for hybrid sedans continues to rise and production normalizes as expected, who will be better positioned to close the Corolla’s advantage — the BYD King with its electrified proposal, or the traditional competitors enhancing their technology?
