The search for a healthier and more economical life has led many Brazilians to a creative solution for the lack of space in apartments: the home garden. Using a simple hydroponic technique with PVC pipes, it’s possible to grow vegetables like lettuce and even tomatoes on a small balcony or service area. The best part is that the initial investment to set up the system can cost less than R$ 200.

This movement, driven by “do it yourself” (DIY) projects that are a hit on platforms like YouTube and sustainability forums, shows a new way to relate to food. It’s the union of the autonomy of producing at home with environmental awareness, all adapted to the reality of large urban centers.

Why Are Brazilians Setting Up Home Gardens?

The trend of the home garden is motivated by a combination of factors. The main one is the search for fresh and pesticide-free food. In a country where the use of pesticides in conventional agriculture is a constant concern, having total control over what you eat has become a major attraction.

Cost savings also play a significant role. With the price of fresh products, especially organic ones, rising higher and higher, producing at home has become a way to ease the budget. In addition, there’s the sustainability factor. Hydroponics is a technique that uses up to 90% less water than traditional agriculture and eliminates the carbon footprint of food transportation. For many, taking care of the plants also serves as “plant therapy,” a relaxing and educational hobby.

The proof that this project is accessible lies in its low cost. The most popular technique is NFT (Nutrient Film Technique), which uses simple materials found at any construction store. The structure is basically assembled with sewage PVC pipes, usually 100 mm, where the plants are fitted in.

The system operates in a circular manner. A small submersible pump, placed in a reservoir with water and nutrients, sends the solution to the top of the structure. From there, the liquid descends by gravity through the pipes, bathing the roots of the plants in a nutrient film before returning to the reservoir. A 2020 study and popular YouTube videos confirm that it is possible to set up a functional system with a budget very close to R$ 200, covering the costs of pipes, pump, hose, and connections.

What to Plant? From Easy Lettuce to Challenging Tomato

For those just starting, lettuce is the perfect choice. It is a fast-growing crop — can be harvested between 38 and 47 days — and adapts very well to the NFT system. Crisp lettuce varieties, such as ‘BRS Leila’, developed by Embrapa, are especially recommended for their tolerance to higher temperatures.

On the other hand, growing tomatoes presents a bigger challenge. Being larger and heavier plants, they require a support system (staking) for their stems and fruits. Furthermore, their nutritional needs shift from the growth phase to the fruiting phase, necessitating more attention from the cultivator. For apartments, it’s ideal to opt for dwarf or cherry tomato varieties, which adapt better to compact spaces.

The Strength of The Community

YouTube Video

No one needs to start from scratch. The major engine behind the popularization of the home garden is online communities. YouTube has become the main instruction manual, with Brazilian channels like “Survivalism” and “Bruno Palma Hydroponics” offering detailed videos with step-by-step assembly instructions.

To clear doubts and resolve specific issues, forums like the r/hydro subreddit on Reddit serve as a global help center, where experienced and novice growers exchange information and solutions. It’s this digital collective intelligence that has enabled more and more people to transform a corner of their apartment into a small and productive urban farm.
