Petrobras Offshore Wind Energy Pilot Project Is Suspended

The Brazilian state-owned company decided to suspend the pilot project for generating offshore wind energy at the Ubarana Field, located in the Potiguar Basin, off the coast of Rio Grande do Norte. Petrobras’ decision was marked by the following announcement in an official letter sent to Ibama: “reevaluated and suspended, while the company explores opportunities for synergies and partnerships with the aim of developing a commercial offshore wind generation project in Brazil.”

The pilot project would have deployed a tower and a wind turbine, in addition to other equipment to measure the potential for wind energy generation offshore. The project would have been located 20 km from the coast of Grumaré, with a water depth of 12 to 16 meters.

The company has chosen to exit the renewable energy sectors, both in the suspension of the aforementioned project and also in the biofuels segment. According to the company, these measures are part of maximizing returns for shareholders.
