Brazil and the U.S. Advance in Nuclear Energy Talks
On the planned trip to the United States in March, President Jair Bolsonaro will have elements to revisit a topic discussed during last year’s visit.
A letter of intent signed on February 3 by the Brazilian state-owned Eletronuclear and Westinghouse, a U.S. company, took the first step towards cooperation between the two countries for extending the operational life of the Angra 1 nuclear power plant.
The document was signed during a meeting in Rio de Janeiro of the Brazil-U.S. Energy Forum, created when Bolsonaro was in Washington.
“The Forum focuses on cooperation in oil and gas, civilian nuclear energy, and energy efficiency and electric power,” explained the press office of the U.S. Embassy in Brasília. During the meeting, a memorandum of understanding was also signed between the U.S. Electric Power Institute – an association of private sector companies – and the Brazilian Association for the Development of Nuclear Activities (ABDAN) to expand cooperation in the field in the coming years.
