The First Hydrogen-Powered Seaplane in the World That Can Fly One Meter Above the Water Surface Will Be Built in Dubai Next Year, Regional Authorities Announced

Simply called ‘The Jet’, the world’s first flying boat will be developed in Dubai and is set to be powered by two hydrogen fuel cells that produce no emissions while gliding smoothly over the waves ’in silence’.  The hydrogen fuel cells in the seaplane create electricity by mixing hydrogen and oxygen in specially treated plates, which are combined to form a larger “stack” of fuel cells.

The First Flying Boat in the World Will Use ‘Hydrofoils’

The seaplane will also use ‘hydrofoils’ – blade-like structures beneath the hull that slice through the water as the boat accelerates, creating lift, similar to the airfoils used in airplanes.

Once built, the flying boat will measure 9.7 meters, weigh 6 tons, and be capable of carrying up to 12 passengers plus a pilot over the waters at a cruise speed of up to 40 knots, or 74 km/h. Conceptual images of the world’s first seaplane show an unusual slim white vehicle, with darkened passenger windows, resembling a marine version of a swish limousine.

Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy

The designer of the jet, the Swiss start-up THE JET ZeroEmission, has signed an agreement with Zenith Marine Services from the United Arab Emirates to manufacture the vehicle.

The city will also host the first test of the vehicle in November 2023, to coincide with COP28, the United Nations Climate Change Conference next year. JET ZeroEmission was founded by French sailor Alain Thébault and has secured part of the necessary €10 million (£8.3 million) funding as part of the agreement. The company has not yet closed the fundraising and is interested in discussions with new potential investors.

The new project is part of Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and aims to produce 75% of its energy needs from clean sources by 2050, turning Dubai into a global hub for clean energy and a green economy.

Project Leaders Speak Out

“We are pleased to make this announcement from Dubai and to be able to manufacture and launch The Jet, which will be the first boat in the world to sail without noise, waves, or emissions, and have the ability to fly 80 cm above the water”, Mr. Thébault stated.

“Dubai is an ideal destination for companies from around the world to develop their innovative projects and achieve the desired success, and that is why we are announcing The Jet, a project that I had the privilege of conceiving with the team. We look forward to meeting those interested in this incredible flying boat at the 28th International Climate Summit (COP28), which will be held in the United Arab Emirates”, added the project CEO.

According to THE JET ZeroEmission, The Jet will primarily be dedicated to serving hotels and ‘exclusive individuals’, and will be available at the ‘most glamorous spots in the world’.
