Some of the Hydroelectric Plants of Eletrobras That Will Receive Investments Are: Paulo Afonso IV, Sobradininho, Maribondo, Itumbiara, Xingó, and Tucuruí

A new program developed by Eletrobras outlines an investment of R$ 8.3 billion by 2025 for the modernization of large hydroelectric plants. The funds will be allocated to the purchase of more modern equipment and the digitalization of the plants, which could increase the production of the hydroelectric plants by 4,300 MW. Investments in the Modernization of Hydroelectric Plants

The modernization includes major hydroelectric plants of Eletrobras, such as Paulo Afonso IV, Sobradinho, Xingó, Marimbondo, Itumbiara, and Tucuruí. New technologies monitor leaks, vibrations, and tensions in the system, in addition to enabling remote operation.

The investment from Eletrobras, which according to the Ministry of Mines and Energy depends on a redesign of market assessment and the potential of these plants, will reduce the downtime for repairs and maintenance of the hydroelectric plants.

In recent years, according to data from the Energy Research Company (EPE), the availability index of hydroelectric plants between 59 MW and 699 MW has decreased, and one of the reasons may be the effect of time on the equipment. In addition to rehability, which involves increasing installed capacity, this problem can be addressed with modernization projects that improve plant operation.

Company that Will Work on Eletrobras’ Modernization Projects

According to the contract, GE will provide services and materials for the replacement of old equipment at six substations of Eletrobras’ subsidiary, located in the states of Alagoas, Bahia, and Pernambuco, in the northeast region of Brazil, with its next-generation grid technologies. The contract also stipulates that GE Renewable Energy will replace approximately 250 circuit breakers and disconnectors that have been in operation for over 45 years.

Cláudio Trejger, president of GE Renewable Energy’s Hydro Division in Latin America, says that although it does not increase the power, modernization enhances efficiency and allows the plant to operate longer, which is beneficial for the system. The executive also emphasizes that current technology can improve plant performance with solutions that monitor and enable remote operations.

A plan for an investment of R$ 1 billion in the revitalization of the Furnas system was presented at the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant. The ceremony was attended by President Jair Bolsonaro, who praised his appointee to assume the presidency of Petrobras, General Joaquim Silva e Luna, who before taking the position at the state-owned company was the director-general of Itaipu Binacional.

The plant stated that the revitalization of transmission lines is essential to increase Brazil’s energy security in the coming decades, as the Furnas system has been in operation for 36 years and has reached the end of its life.

According to Itaipu, the investment will be around R$ 1 billion, which will contribute to Brazil’s gross profit over the next five years. The investment will be allocated to the modernization of equipment responsible for energy transmission.
