Businesswoman From Paraíba Gets Mega-Sena Numbers Right But Loses R$ 202 Million Due to Ticket Error; Case Ongoing in Federal Court Since May 2025.
Luck seemed set to change the life of a businesswoman in João Pessoa (PB) in early May 2025, when the winning numbers of Mega-Sena 2,743, held on May 8, matched exactly with the bet she had placed online. But the dream of becoming a millionaire quickly turned into a nightmare: due to a registration error in the digital lottery system, the ticket was not validated, and the R$ 202 million from the grand prize never made it to the hands of the supposed winner.
The case, which gained national attention on May 10, 2025, was revealed by the portal UAI and later covered by outlets like G1 and Correio da Paraíba, raising an unprecedented discussion about system failures, the responsibility of betting platforms, and the legal limits of online gaming in the country.
The Ticket That Was Worth a Fortune, But Never Officially Existed
According to a report from Metrópoles (05/10/2025), the businesswoman, who preferred not to disclose her name — had placed her bet via the app of a digital lottery platform licensed by Caixa Econômica Federal.

According to her attorney, the payment was duly confirmed, and the chosen numbers were exactly the same as those drawn in the contest 2,743 of Mega-Sena: 05, 09, 12, 36, 44, and 60.
However, when she tried to check the ticket after the draw, she noticed that the system indicated the bet as “not completed.”
The platform, in turn, claimed that the payment had not been fully processed before the contest closed, which is why the ticket was not validated in the Caixa system.
“She saw the payment receipt, but the ticket did not appear registered. Hours later, the system had already closed the bets. Even so, the bank confirmation was made normally,” explained the businesswoman’s attorney to the portal Economic News Brasil (05/11/2025).
When the Dream Turns Into a Legal Dispute
The businesswoman then decided to take legal action in the Federal Court of Paraíba, alleging failure in the provision of services by the company that intermediated the bets.
The lawsuit was filed on May 13, 2025, and the defense requests that the banking system and the platform operator present transaction records proving that the payment was made during the lottery hours of operation.
According to the initial petition, the amount was debited at 7:48 PM, just two minutes before the official end of betting, which occurs at 7:50 PM. The company, however, argues that the transaction is only completed after confirmation from Caixa, and in this case, the payment was processed at 7:52 PM, two minutes after the closing.
The two-minute detail is what separates the businesswoman from a fortune of R$ 202 million — the largest prize paid by Mega-Sena up to that moment in 2025.
What Caixa and the Digital Platform Say
Caixa Econômica Federal, the official body responsible for lotteries in Brazil, stated in a note to the portal G1 Paraíba that “there is no valid bet registered in the client’s name” and that the intermediary platforms operate under a risk contract, being responsible for ensuring that bets are completed within the deadline.
The intermediary company, whose name has also not been disclosed for legal reasons, defends itself by claiming that “there was no error in the system, but rather a delay in the bank compensation beyond its control”, emphasizing that the amount was fully refunded to the client.
However, according to the businesswoman’s attorney, the refund “does not resolve the moral and material damage caused,” as the symbolic amount of the bet was small, but the potential loss was incalculable.
Technical Failures and the Challenge of Online Betting
With the growing popularity of digital lotteries, cases like this raise alarms about the control and transparency of electronic systems. Since 2020, the number of online bets has increased by more than 240% in Brazil, according to data from Caixa itself.
Experts in digital and consumer law state that the lack of clear protocols for disputes involving system errors or confirmation failures creates a dangerous legal vacuum, in which the player is at a disadvantage.
Attorney and law professor at UnB, José Renato Maia, explained to Jornal da Paraíba that “even if there is a technical failure, civil liability can fall on the provider if the consumer proves that they fulfilled their part.”
“If the payment was made within the deadline, even if the processing occurred seconds later, there are elements to characterize service failure,” Maia said.
A Dispute That Could Set a National Precedent
The action filed by the businesswoman from Paraíba is seen by experts as a possible legal landmark for the digital lottery sector.
If the court recognizes that there was a failure on the platform, the case could set a precedent for holding intermediaries accountable in similar situations.
“Today, the consumer bets believing that the transaction occurs in real-time, but in practice, there is a lag between the bank’s authorization and the registration at Caixa. This gap is the weak point of the system,” explains the consumer defense attorney Clarissa Fontes, in an interview with Economic News Brasil.
Current Status of the Case
So far, the case is under review by the 3rd Federal Court of João Pessoa (PB). In September 2025, the presiding judge ordered that Caixa Econômica Federal, the issuing bank of the payment, and the betting platform present the technical logs of the transactions and the exact times of registration, to prove whether the amount was processed within the regulatory deadline.
The final decision has not yet been rendered, but the expectation is that the judgment will occur by December 2025. Meanwhile, the businesswoman continues to assert that “she was lucky to hit the numbers, but unlucky to depend on a system that did not work.”
If the request is granted, this could be the first case in Brazil where a technical failure in a digital bet results in compensation proportional to the prize amount — something unprecedented in Mega-Sena history.
O problema seria facilmente resolvido com a plataforma digital encerrando suas apostas antes do término oficial. Tipo, uns 30 minutos.
Nesse caso, a cliente não tem culpa porque fez a aposta no horário apontado como válido, e a caixa não tem culpa, porque a plataforma não computou a aposta, fazendo só o estorno.
Porém duvido que a plataforma consiga pagar um processo de 202 milhões.
Minha opinião, a mulher vai receber, se muito, 10% do valor total.

Ela escolheu exatamente os números que ninguém tinha jogado e o “sistema” já havia escolhido… Alguém consegue acreditar nessas loterias? As bolas são pesadas antes dos sorteios ao vivo?
