With Various Investments, Minas Gerais Remains the Leader as the State with the Most Installed Capacity in Distributed Generation in Brazil, with 17.8% of Solar Energy Projects
Only in the first four months of this year (January to April 2021), 1.1 GW was added to the installed solar energy capacity in Brazil, boosted by Distributed Generation, with more than half of that amount in Minas Gerais. Overall, distributed generation and new investments from solar energy represented 1.8% of the Brazilian electric matrix in April, reaching 8.813 GW.

Data from Absolar on Distributed Generation
According to the solar energy sector association, ABSOLAR, distributed generation, in the months of January to April, grew by about 17.8%, reaching a total of 5.485 GW, compared to 4.654 GW in December 2020. Meanwhile, centralized solar energy generation expanded by only 7.5% to 3.327 GW.
Minas Gerais remains the leader in distributed generation among the states, with 17.8% of installed projects, followed by São Paulo (12.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (12.4%). The main driver of distributed generation has been the residential sector, accounting for 40% of the installed capacity. In second place is commerce with 36.7%, followed by the rural segment (13.1%) and industry (8.5%).

Investments in Solar Energy Are Increasing in Minas Gerais
As mentioned earlier, Minas Gerais is the leader among states with the largest installed capacity in the solar energy and distributed generation industry, with 862.9 MW in operation. The estimate is that this number could be even higher, considering that there are still many investments underway in the sector.
The installed capacity of energy in this sector in small plots and rooftops in the state of Minas Gerais accounts for 18.5% of the entire distributed solar energy park in Brazil. In total, there are 74,511 operational connections in 840 municipalities out of the 853 in Minas Gerais.
Currently, the number of consumers using alternative energy is around 103,733, a figure that will continue to grow, as investments in this modality are increasingly increasing in Minas Gerais.
Why Invest in Solar Energy?
Given that Brazil, like many other countries, aims to reduce carbon emissions, experts believe that the country should become one of the largest markets for distributed generation in the world.
Solar energy provides savings of up to 90% on electricity bills, due to its best cost-benefit ratio.
