Kia Rio, Launched In Brazil In 2020 And Already Discontinued, Reappears As A “Good Deal” In The Used Car Market Thanks To The Known 1.6 AT6 Setup And Fipe Prices Starting Around R$ 60K.

The Kia Rio arrived here in January 2020, imported from Mexico, in two versions (LX and EX) and always with a 1.6 16V flex engine producing up to 130 hp linked to a six-speed automatic transmission. In practice, it is the same setup used by the Hyundai HB20 family of that time, which contributes to the perception of reliability and simple maintenance. At launch, Kia announced 5 years of warranty or 100,000 km, which was the brand’s standard at that time.

In terms of measurements, the Rio was positioned among the larger compacts: 4.07 m in length, 2.58 m in wheelbase, 1.73 m in width, and 1.45 m in height. Another advantage was the 325-liter trunk, above direct rivals. These numbers explain why many referred to it as a “HB20 in a Korean suit.”

In the launch price table, the Rio LX started at R$ 69,990 and the Rio EX cost R$ 78,990. At the time, Kia projected modest sales, but the exchange rate environment and the rapid arrival of global restyling worked against it.

Even the LX version already brought electric steering, 7” multimedia with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, traction and stability controls, hill start assist, tire pressure sensor, rear camera, and fog lights — a coherent set for the category. For those seeking more comfort, the EX added LED DRL, cruise control, leather seats, digital air conditioning, and mirrors with electric folding and integrated turn signals.

In press tests, the 1.6 flex delivered 130/123 hp (E/G) and 16.5/16 kgfm, with a well-matched automatic transmission for urban use. The 325-liter trunk and the 45-liter tank were also highlighted in evaluations at the time.

How Much Is It Today: Fipe Prices Of The Used Kia Rio (September 2025)

In the used car market, the Rio was forgotten by the general public, but it has been attracting the attention of those looking for an affordable automatic with known mechanics. In the Fipe Table for September 2025, the average values are:

  • Kia Rio LX 1.6 Automatic 2020: R$ 60,726 (Fipe code 018095-5).
  • Kia Rio EX 1.6 Automatic 2021: R$ 78,603 (Fipe code 018094-7).

The above numbers match with independent compilations that reflect the Fipe database, useful for guiding negotiations and insurance. It is worth noting that Fipe publishes market averages, and condition, mileage, and history can drive the price up or down.

Why Did The Kia Rio Discontinue So Quickly In Brazil?

Despite the good package and dynamic tuning, the Rio didn’t take off. In November 2021, Kia suspended sales citing the exchange rate of the dollar and low competitiveness of the imported hatchback, removing the model from its website. Subsequently, the Rio was also being discontinued in other markets as the global brand repositioned its entry-level lineup.

In Brazil, the range shrank to just one version (EX) by March 2021, signaling the short breath of the project here. For used car consumers, this history explains why the price today is attractive, without implying problematic mechanics.

Is It Worth It? Points To Consider Before Buying A Rio 1.6 AT6

If your priority is a reliable automatic and you like the discreet design, the Rio offers a known setup (1.6 engine and AT6 widely used by Hyundai/Kia in Brazil), honest equipment, and competitive interior space. It is an urban hatch that fulfills its purpose well, with simple preventive maintenance and a good level of active safety already in the LX.

As with any less popular imported vehicle, it is worth checking the parts network in your area and the service history. The original warranty for the 2020/2021 models was 5 years/100,000 km; therefore, 2021 units purchased new may still be within the coverage until 2026, depending on the initial registration. (The warranty extension announced by Kia Brazil in 2024 applies from January 1, 2024 and does not change the rules for previous cars.)

Ultimately, the Kia Rio has become a discreet “find” for those who want automatic transmission, a complete package, and a reasonable price, as long as the buyer accepts a discontinued car and does their homework on the inspection and availability of parts.
