Good news for Brazil’s naval construction! Executives from Toyo Setal and EBR are optimistic about the competition for new projects in the coming years

The CEOs of EBR and Toyo Setal, respectively, Maurício Godoy and Dorian Zen, are confident. Despite the challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, which have been overcome with social distancing measures, reorganization of workflows, mass testing, and enhanced sanitation, both companies have managed to remain operational throughout 2020 and are competing for new projects to be executed starting in 2021.

In the offshore oil and gas sector, which is EBR’s area of operation, the outlook is very positive. From 3 to 4 FPSO platform projects are expected each year over the next five years. “Petrobras announced seven FPSO platforms in the Búzios field in the pre-salt area for the coming years, with local content rules. We have already passed the technical and financial analysis phase and have been approved. We are well positioned in these disputes and are confident that we will win projects,” says Godoy.

According to him, the pre-salt fields are recognized for their high quality, and this has driven the FPSO market in Brazil. In addition to new projects, Petrobras announced its intention to balance the contracting model of its FPSO fleet between leasing and owned platforms (EPC). In recent years, the state-owned company focused on leasing and now intends to continue with EPC contracts, as in the P-78 and P-79 platforms, which are in bidding.

Exxon Mobil, Shell, BP, and Equinor are also increasing their participation in the Brazilian offshore market based on the acquisition of new oil fields in recent oil auctions.

According to Godoy, EBR Shipyard is well prepared to meet these demands. “Throughout 2020, we made investments to increase capacity, including building a new paint booth, remodeling the pipeshop, widening streets, and installing industrial gas in all production buildings. The investments also include improvements in occupational safety, reaching international standards.”
