Brazilian Army Buys Dozens Of Centauro II BR Armored Vehicles That Promise To Modernize Brazilian Troops’ Standards. Check Out The Details About The Vehicles That Cost About R$ 5 Billion.

The Brazilian Army is about to take a new step towards modernizing its fleet. With the imminent signing of the contract for the purchase of 96 state-of-the-art Centauro II BR armored vehicles, the country consolidates its defense capability and invests in cutting-edge technology to ensure superiority on the battlefield.

Centauro II BR Armored Vehicles May Be Acquired As Early As 2025

The Army’s Science and Technology Department recently published the official order confirming the Test and Evaluation Report of the two models of the VBCS Cav-MSR Centauro II BR, from the evaluation batch.

This is the last bureaucratic step before the signing of the acquisition contract, which provides for the purchase of up to 96 units of the Centauro II BR armored vehicles.

The vehicles will be delivered in successive batches, enhancing the operational power of the Brazilian Army troops. The Army’s High Command has already defined the schedule for the formalization of the contract, expected to take place before the end of the first half of this year.

With this purchase, the Brazilian Army expands its fleet with modern and efficient Centauro II BR armored vehicles, ensuring greater protection and offensive capability for its troops.

The new armored vehicles stand out for their mobility, firepower, and advanced technology, being among the most innovative armored vehicles today. This purchase by the Brazilian Army represents a strategic advancement for national defense and is aligned with the Army’s Guarani Strategic Program.

In addition to advancing the negotiation, the Centauro II BR armored vehicles will be the main attraction at the CIO stand, the Iveco – Oto Melara Consortium. IDV, Iveco Defence Vehicles, will also showcase other strategic models, such as the Guarani 6×6 and the Guaicurus 4×4, both essential for the renewal of the Brazilian armored fleet.

Know The Value Of The Centauro II BR Armored Vehicles

In total, the Brazilian Army bought 96 units for R$ 5 billion from the consortium of Italian manufacturers Iveco-Oto Melara. With an autonomy of 800 kilometers, a top speed of 105 km/h, a 120 mm cannon, 8×8 traction, and V-level (maximum) armor, the Centauro II BRA, 2015 version, surpasses in technical aspects the Cascavel model, 1974 version, which still integrates the Armed Forces of Brazil and much of South America, such as Bolivia, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

It is worth noting that in December of last year, the Brazilian Army carried out the operational technical evaluation phase of the Centauro II BRA armored vehicles. At that time, the evaluation firing of the combat vehicle was carried out, which is part of the vehicle’s operational testing phase.

Prior to this, the military underwent technical training and familiarization with the Centauro II at the CIBld facilities in Santa Maria (RS). In total, the schedule lasted 10 weeks.

Strategic Program Armored Forces

The purchase of the Centauro II BR armored vehicles began in 2021. This project is part of the Strategic Program Armored Forces, one of the programs that comprise the Strategic Portfolio, under the responsibility of the Army Project Office (EPEx). The activity at Saicã integrates the completion of the testing and evaluation plan for this vehicle.

It aims to certify the conditions to proceed, starting this year, with the remainder of the purchase from the manufacturer. The project is sized for about 15 years of deliveries, totaling 98 units in annual batches starting in 2026. After the evaluation is completed, the purchase of the vehicles will represent a strategic advancement for Brazil, reinforcing its commitment to modernizing and enhancing the Armed Forces’ efficiency, as well as ensuring that the country remains a relevant player in the international defense scenario.
