One of the most popular apps for personalizing Android, the Nova Launcher, is running out of time. Developer Kevin Barry, creator of the app, announced last Saturday (6/9) that the project will be discontinued. The decision marks the end of more than a decade of a journey during which Nova established itself as an essential tool for millions of users around the world seeking to transform their phones with freedom and control.
The announcement was made by Barry through an open letter in which he also communicated his departure from Branch, a data analytics company that acquired the app in 2022. According to the programmer, his recent efforts were aimed at transforming Nova into an open-source project — a promise that had been made by Branch when it acquired the app. However, the company allegedly ordered an immediate halt to these initiatives.
A Legacy That Redefined Android for Over a Decade
Launched over ten years ago, the Nova Launcher was much more than a simple replacement for the Android home screen. It became synonymous with personalization freedom, allowing users to deeply change the system’s appearance — something unthinkable for other systems, like Apple’s iOS.

The company, specializing in data and digital behavior tracking, caused concern among users, who feared the insertion of trackers or invasive changes to the app’s philosophy — originally built on the pillars of privacy and performance.
To contain the uproar, Branch stated at the time that the source code of Nova Launcher would be released as open source if Barry left the project in the future. However, this promise will not be fulfilled. With the creator’s departure, the code will remain closed, and the app’s development will cease with no guarantee of continuity from the community.
According to the website Android Authority, since the mass layoffs carried out by Branch in 2024, Barry has been the sole technical responsible for Nova Launcher. The last stable update was released in May of that year — and it is now confirmed that it will indeed be the last.
Community Mourns the End of Nova Launcher
The news of the discontinuation sparked mourning among Android fans. In forums like Reddit, the app was described as “legendary” and “responsible for making Android a free and customizable platform.” For many users, Nova represented not just a tool but a milestone in the history of Google’s mobile operating system.
This feeling of nostalgia and loss is mixed with indignation at Branch’s decision to halt the code-opening process, which would prevent independent developers from continuing the project. Many view this stance as a breach of trust with the user base that has supported the app for so many years.
What Remains After the End of Nova Launcher?
With the end of Nova Launcher, the landscape of Android customization becomes more limited. Although there are other launcher options available, none have achieved the same stability, lightness, and number of features as Nova. Manufacturers like Samsung and Xiaomi already offer some customization possibilities through their theme stores or software like Good Lock, but they still do not provide the same flexibility.
Meanwhile, long-time users will need to seek alternatives — or keep the versions of Nova already installed while they work, even without future updates. The absence of a clear roadmap for replacements reinforces the feeling that the end of Nova Launcher truly marks the close of an era in Android personalization.
