The official donation of the airfield in São José da Barra strengthens Naval Corps operations and expands the strategic presence of the Navy in Minas Gerais

The formalization of the donation of the old Furnas airport took place on March 30, 2026, consolidating a process that began years earlier.
The Brazilian Navy had already been using the structure since 2022 as an Expeditionary Air Base, which reinforces operational continuity in the region.

The agreement was signed with Axia Energia, the Association of Municipalities of the Furnas Lake, and the municipality of São José da Barra.
The signing took place at the Fortress of São José, on Cobra Island, in Rio de Janeiro, consolidating the definitive transfer of the area.

The airfield’s infrastructure includes a runway of approximately 1,600 meters, a hangar, refueling facilities, and paved access.
This set guarantees direct support to military operations and expands the logistical capacity of the naval force.

Strategic relevance of the airfield for military operations

The use of the space was intensified after the accident that occurred on January 8, 2022, at Furnas Lake.
At that time, the collapse of a cliff hit boats and resulted in the death of 10 people.

Following this episode, the Navy’s presence in the region began to expand.
Thus, the airfield began to play a fundamental role in logistical support for the activities of the Naval Corps.

Furthermore, the Navy’s operations are not limited to the maritime coast, as they include rivers and lakes throughout the country.
In this context, Furnas Lake has consolidated itself as a strategic area for military operations and training.

Operational potential of Furnas Lake

The region allows for various types of training, integrating multiple operational scenarios.
Among the activities carried out, operations with vessels, amphibious armored vehicles, and aircraft stand out.

Actions such as parachute jumps and tactical infiltrations are also executed.
This set of operations demonstrates the versatility of the environment for military purposes.

Furnas Lake has a water volume four times greater than that of Guanabara Bay.
Additionally, its perimeter corresponds to almost half of the Brazilian coastline, enhancing its strategic value.

Location favors logistics and mobility

The air base is located about 700 km from Brasília.
Despite the distance, the journey can be made in approximately one hour of flight.

This positioning represents about half of the distance between the federal capital and the Brazilian coastline.
Thus, the location facilitates quick movements and enhances logistical efficiency.

According to the commander of the Naval Corps, Carlos Chagas Vianna Braga, the area presents exceptional conditions.
He highlighted the integration between air, land, and river operations, as well as support for Civil Defense.

Operation Furnas expands military integration

Since 2022, the Expeditionary Air Base has been used in Operation Furnas, held annually.
The exercise brings together national forces and international partners in integrated training.

In October 2025, the operation mobilized about 1,800 Brazilian military personnel.
Additionally, it included the participation of 10 friendly nations.

The training involved the movement of troops from Rio de Janeiro to Southern Minas.
Fighter jets, amphibious tracked vehicles, and naval means already operating on the lake were used.

During the operation, flight tests were also completed with an autonomous attack drone.
The equipment was developed by the Navy itself and has independent navigation.

Integrated actions strengthen emergency response

The signing of the protocol also boosts collaborative actions in the region.
The Navy participates in workshops with Civil Defense and other institutions.

Among those involved are police, firefighters, universities, and Axia Energia.
These initiatives promote practical disaster simulations and enhance response capacity.

Furthermore, the structure is used in civic-social actions.
Medical, dental, vaccination services, and preventive lectures are offered.

According to Mayor Marcelo Rodrigues da Silva, the partnership strengthens the region.
He states that the municipality has become strategically more relevant.

Consolidation of the Navy’s presence in the region

The formalization of the donation in 2026 marks a new stage of military presence in São José da Barra.
The air base now plays a permanent role in the Navy’s operations in the interior of the country.

This advancement reinforces the integration between defense, logistics, and support for the local population.
Thus, Furnas Lake consolidates itself as one of the main strategic points for military operations in Brazil.
