The national supersonic fighter Gripen F-39E manufactured by Embraer in partnership with Saab is expected to fly in the second half of the year, marking a technological and industrial advance for Brazil.
Brazil is preparing to launch the first supersonic fighter jet manufactured in the country. The advanced Gripen F-39E fighter jet, produced in Brazil through an international partnership, is scheduled to make its first flight in the second half of this year. This is a historic milestone for Brazilian industry and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
represents the success of an ambitious contract technology transfer. The new star of the FAB will soon be at the head of the runway, ready to explore the Brazilian skies.
National production: the manufacture of the national supersonic fighter Gripen F-39E in the São Paulo axis
The Gripen F-39E is manufactured in the state of São Paulo. Two main industrial units form the production hub. The factory of the Swedish company Saab, in São Bernardo do Campo, is responsible for the heavy parts. The final assembly of the aircraft is carried out by Embraer, in Gavião Peixoto. Saab installed the Gripen Flight Test Center and the Design Center at Embraer, structures dedicated to the program.

The strategic plan is to transform this Brazilian industrial hub, which includes other partner companies, into a hub for the construction and export of supersonic fighter jets to other countries. Brazil prepares to launch the first supersonic fighter made in the country based on this robust framework.
Technology transfer and job creation with Gripen
The Gripen program represents Saab’s largest technology transfer initiative ever. It is also Sweden’s largest export ever, according to the company. Over the past ten years, 350 Brazilian professionals have received specialized training at the company’s headquarters in Sweden.
The contract totals US$4 billion, encompassing production infrastructure and the delivery of 36 Gripen F-39E fighters to the FAB (eight of which are already in Brazil, manufactured in Sweden). It is estimated that the program will generate between 10 and 13 direct jobs in Brazil. These positions are distributed among Saab, Embraer and partner companies such as Akaer, AEL Sistemas, Atech, among others.
Akaer, for example, has seen its workforce grow from 75 to 700 people in recent years, reflecting the program’s impact. “Participating in the Gripen program is a milestone in our history,” says Cesar Silva, president of Akaer.
FAB Gripen F-39E's remarkable capabilities and performance
The Gripen F-39E is increasingly recognized internationally. It stands out for its advanced onboard technology, low maintenance costs and high reliability. A unique capability of the aircraft is its ability to land and take off on short runways, less than 600 meters long. The fighter is supersonic, flying at Mach 2 (twice the speed of sound), which is equivalent to 2.450 miles per hour.
At maximum speed, it could fly from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro in just twelve minutes. Former Defense Minister Nelson Jobim classified the FAB's choice of the Gripen as a good one, calling the fighter a "worldwide success". Recently, in the Cruzeiro do Sul Exercise (Cruzex), organized by the FAB, the Gripen's performance exceeded expectations. The Brazilian squadron excelled in simulated engagements, including a notable victory against US F-15C fighters.
