National Supersonic Fighter Gripen F-39E Manufactured by Embraer in Partnership with Saab to Fly in the Second Half, Marking a Technological and Industrial Advancement for Brazil.
Brazil is preparing to launch the first supersonic fighter manufactured in the country. The advanced Gripen F-39E fighter, produced domestically through an international partnership, is scheduled to make its first flight in the second half of this year. This is a historic milestone for the Brazilian industry and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
This represents the success of an ambitious technology transfer contract. The new star of the FAB will soon be on the runway, ready to explore Brazilian skies.
National Production: The Manufacturing of the National Supersonic Fighter Gripen F-39E in the São Paulo Axis
The manufacturing of the Gripen F-39E takes place in the state of São Paulo. Two main industrial units form the production axis. The factory of the Swedish company Saab, in São Bernardo do Campo, is responsible for heavy parts. The final assembly of the aircraft is carried out by Embraer, in Gavião Peixoto. Saab has installed the Gripen Flight Test Center and the Design Center at Embraer, dedicated structures for the program.

Instead of demolishing old coal warehouses, London doubled their roofs until they met in the center and created one of the most curious renovations in King’s Cross.
The strategic plan is to transform this Brazilian industrial hub, which includes other partner companies, into a center for the construction and export of the supersonic fighter to other countries. Brazil is preparing to launch the first supersonic fighter manufactured in the country based on this robust structure.
Technology Transfer and Job Creation with the Gripen
The Gripen program represents the largest technology transfer initiative ever carried out by Saab. It is also Sweden’s largest export of all time, according to the company. Over the past ten years, 350 Brazilian professionals have received specialized training at the company’s headquarters in Sweden.
The contract totals 4 billion dollars, encompassing production infrastructure and the delivery of 36 Gripen F-39E fighters to the FAB (eight of which are already in Brazil, manufactured in Sweden). It is estimated that the program will create between 10,000 and 13,000 direct jobs in Brazil. These positions are distributed among Saab, Embraer, and partner companies such as Akaer, AEL Sistemas, Atech, and others.
Akaer, for example, has seen its workforce jump from 75 to 700 employees in recent years, reflecting the impact of the program. “Being part of the Gripen program is a milestone in our history”, says Cesar Silva, president of Akaer.
Remarkable Capabilities and Performance of the Gripen F-39E of the FAB
The Gripen F-39E is increasingly recognized internationally. It stands out for its advanced embedded technology, low maintenance costs, and high reliability. A unique capability of the aircraft is to land and take off on short runways, with less than 600 meters in length. The fighter is supersonic, flying at Mach 2 (twice the speed of sound), which is equivalent to 2,450 miles per hour.
At maximum speed, it could fly from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro in just twelve minutes. The former Minister of Defense, Nelson Jobim, classified the FAB’s choice of Gripen as correct, calling the fighter a “worldwide success”. Recently, during the Cruzeiro do Sul Exercise (Cruzex), organized by the FAB, the Gripen’s performance exceeded expectations. The Brazilian squadron stood out in simulated confrontations, including a remarkable victory against the United States’ F-15C fighters.
