An Elderly Man Bought a Tesla Cybertruck, Drove Only 109 Km and Decided He Did Not Want the Car Anymore, Asking His Son to Sell It.
In a curious episode of the automotive market, an elderly couple from the United States bought a Tesla Cybertruck, drove it only 109 km, and decided to sell it.
The Cybertruck, officially launched in 2024, is one of the most controversial models of the last decade. Its futuristic design and advanced technology attracted thousands of buyers.
However, as this case shows, not everyone easily adapts to the innovative concept of the electric pickup.
-
Less than a Tera TSI, up to 710 km of range and charging in 9 minutes: the new BYD Song Ultra expands the Chinese brand’s bet on increasingly faster, more technological, and competitively priced electric SUVs.
-
With a 1.0 engine producing 75 hp and costing less than R$ 70,000, Fiat’s car returns to the podium as the cheapest in the country; a temporary promotion for the 2026 Like version reduces the price of the Fiat Mobi.
-
With a mild hybrid system of 48 V, 176 hp and a price of R$ 175,990 in the Sahara version, the new Jeep Renegade changes mostly on the inside, improves slightly in fuel consumption, and remains almost the same car.
-
With a 293.5 cm³ engine and a range of up to 400 km with a 14.1-liter tank, the Honda CB 300F Twister 2026 has up to 24.7 hp, an initial price of R$ 25,150, and already exceeds R$ 29,000 in the Fipe Table.
What Led to the Quick Sale?
The owners, both in their 70s, waited months to receive the vehicle. When they finally got to test it, they quickly realized that it did not meet their expectations.
The couple’s son explained in a sales ad that his parents found the Cybertruck “too large to be comfortable” and that the steer-by-wire system was difficult to get used to.
Additionally, they acquired the top-of-the-line Cyberbeast version, which features three motors and an impressive 845 horsepower.
This model can accelerate from 0 to 97 km/h in just 2.6 seconds and cover a quarter mile in 11 seconds.
For elderly drivers seeking comfort and practicality, these features may be more daunting than exciting.
Who Is the Cybertruck For?
The Tesla Cybertruck is a vehicle that deviates from conventional standards. Its angular design and stainless steel exterior attract attention wherever it goes.
Inside, it features a minimalist dashboard, a yoke-styled steering wheel, and an 18.5-inch touchscreen, as well as a 9.4-inch rear display.
Another factor that may have weighed on the elderly couple’s decision was the Full-Self Driving (FSD) system, which requires a subscription for full use.
Although Tesla promises advanced autonomy, the need to adapt to the software can be a challenge for those not accustomed to highly automated vehicles.
The Impact on the Resale Market
With only 68 miles (approx. 109 km) driven, the Cybertruck was listed for sale on the Cars & Bids platform without a minimum reserve price. This means that regardless of the highest bid, the vehicle will be sold at the end of the auction.
So far, the highest bid has reached US$ 88,888, a value below the original price of US$ 99,990 for this version.
Additionally, the FSD functionality adds an extra cost of US$ 8,000, which may further hinder the recovery of the investment.
This case highlights a common phenomenon in the luxury car and advanced technology market: rapid depreciation.
Although the Cybertruck generated a lot of hype, very specific vehicles can lose value quickly when initial demand decreases.
