Amidst the pandemic, investments in infrastructure continue on the Oeste-Leste Railway works in Bahia. The Federal Government, through Valec, is working on the excavation of the Guanambi-Bom Jesus da Lapa route. The drilling and blasting activities, which will allow the railway section to pass through the area, are in full swing with 1,000 workers.

According to the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, the Federal Government will grant the Ilhéus-Caetité section in 2020, focusing on mining.

“Valec is also preparing an extension of the railway to Barreiras, considering the growth of agribusiness throughout the Matopiba region, which includes the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia”.

Infrastructure, Oeste-Leste Railway Works/Bahia

With approximately 1,527 km in length, the West East Integration Railway-FIOL will connect the future port of Ilhéus (on the Bahia coast) to Figueirópolis (in Tocantins), where it will connect with the North-South Railway.

Objectives

  • Establish more economical alternatives for long-distance cargo flows;
  • Favor multimodality;
  • Interconnect the Brazilian railway network;
  • Propose a new logistical alternative for the flow of agricultural and mining production through the port terminal of Ilhéus/BA; and
  • Encourage investments to enhance production and induce modern production processes.

Benefits

  • Reduce transportation costs for grains, alcohol, and ores destined for domestic and foreign markets;
  • Increase the agro-industrial production of the region, motivated by better access conditions to national and international markets;
  • Interconnect the states of Tocantins, Maranhão, Goiás, and Bahia to the ports of Ilhéus/BA and Itaqui/MA, which will provide better
  • economic performance for the entire railway network;
  • Encourage investments, modernization, and production;
  • Improve income and wealth distribution nationwide;
  • Reduce pollutant emissions;
  • Reduce the number of accidents on highways.
