The Municipality of Aracruz, in Northern Espírito Santo, has attracted port investment for its port and Sudene area. The municipal government is working to modernize the infrastructure to meet the growing demands for transportation, logistics, and services.

Portocel, which was previously focused solely on cellulose, is expanding its activities. In this way, Imetame intends to inaugurate its general cargo terminal between the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025. With a large back area and deep waters, the tendency is to assume a leading role in a short time.

To improve the flow of people and goods in the city, some measures are being taken. One of them is the duplication of the Vitória-Minas railway, which connects the city to Barra do Riacho. The aim is to give more fluidity to traffic to facilitate the transport of passengers and goods. However, the state government is also building a road arc between Jacaraípe and Santa Cruz, aiming to bypass the coastline and avoid urban congestion.

With investments in infrastructure practically guaranteed, Aracruz is ready to become one of the main logistics hubs in Northeast Brazil in the coming years. The city offers a range of tax incentives provided by the Superintendence for the Development of the Northeast (Sudene), as well as subsidized credit lines that attract investors regarding port investments.

The municipality is now expecting a significant change in the local economy with the growth of these port investments and road projects. Logistics entrepreneurs are also pushing for the highways and railways that access Aracruz to be expanded and modernized. A duplicated expressway would allow Greater Vitória to be just 1 hour from the center of the Sudene area, making the Metropolitan region more economically attractive.

These port investments have been adding to local initiatives to make Aracruz a highly competitive destination in the national logistics sector. With modern infrastructure that meets local demands, Aracruz will have real conditions to become one of the main logistics hubs in the Northeast Region in the coming years.

The Logistics Platform That Espírito Santo Needs for Success

The Brazilian government, led by the Minister of the Environment Marina Silva and Minister of Agriculture Carlos Fávaro, aims to double or triple Brazilian agricultural production in 20 years, which will require significant port and road investments in infrastructure and logistics.

To achieve these goals, the government has been working to improve and expand existing railways. The recently created Railway Authorization Program is an important measure in this regard. Through it, private companies can propose, construct, and operate stretches of railways, as well as branches, yards, and railway terminals.

One of these authorizations was EF-352, which connects to Norte-Sul in the Midwest passing through Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais. However, there are other measures being taken to increase the capacity of existing ports. Various authorizations have already been granted.

This logistics expansion would allow not only the flow of agricultural production to the ports of the Northeast and South of the country but also the export of grains to other countries. Initially, investments in infrastructure create job opportunities and a significant boost to the national economy.

However, this change also needs to have the political strength necessary to enable realistic financial projects, as well as attracting private port investment to finance the works. Vale is already negotiating with the government to construct a stretch connecting the Vitória-Minas railway to Ubu and establish a loading capacity that would feed the new Imetame Port in Aracruz.

Today, almost all Brazilian agricultural production is transported by trucks and waterways with sequential transshipments between trucks, barges, ships, and river ports. If the government’s plan successfully materializes, it will have a direct impact on this limiting reality and pave the way for a modern logistics platform capable of meeting the demands of Brazilian agriculture in the coming years.
