Tom Jobim – Galeão International Airport, better known as Galeão Airport, in Rio de Janeiro, was hit by a huge fire in one of its warehouses on Wednesday, January 18.
A large dense cloud of black smoke was seen earlier this afternoon by those passing through the surroundings of the Rio de Janeiro Airport while several teams were ready and fought the fire trying to control the situation. There were no casualties and the cause of the fire was not known.
According to g1, due to the size of the fire, the Ilha do Governador Fire Department headquarters was called at 13:46 pm, as well as the other barracks in Grajau, São Cristóvão, Central, Iraja, Nova Iguaçu, Penha, Catete and Tijuca. According to the Secretary of Civil Defense, the work involved more than 150 men, as well as a helicopter to view the fire from above.
This affected cargo terminal is located on the opposite side of the passenger terminal area, despite this, the concessionaire Riogaleão reported that some of the flights had delays as a result of what happened. Runway 10/28 was being used at the time of the incident, so the airport continued to operate normally. This all also indicates that the help from external fire stations allowed Galeão teams to remain available for each operation at the airport. Otherwise, no plane could land or take off.

flammable material
According to the Secretary of State for Civil Defense (Sedec-RJ), Colonel Leandro Sampaio, the area that was affected had about 10 m² and had a division of four parts, only one of which was empty. One of the divisions of this area contained a large amount of hospital supplies. Another area also affected served as a warehouse for dental materials. The last space contained the aircraft that ended up being set on fire.
According to Leandro Sampaio, the colonel, the shed was new and had just been renovated, however, this space held a considerable amount of flammable material, such as, for example, paper, plastic and wood. Also according to the Secretary of State for Civil Defense, Leandro Sampaio, the Fire Department would not have been warned by the fire brigade team at Galeão Airport. Leandro confirmed that the Ilha do Governador battalion went into a state of alert after being alerted by the press coverage and immediately went to the scene.
“We were not called by the Rio Galeão fire brigade. We learned about the fire from journalists and our team voluntarily went to the Galeao International Airport”. The fire was reportedly under control around 15 pm, according to the Rio de Janeiro Fire Department. After that, in posts on social media, the Rio Operations Center recommended attention to drivers passing through that region.
