Minister Renan Filho stated on Wednesday (18) that the Ministry of Transportation has made the discussion of the Ferrogrão project with the Ministry of the Environment one of its priorities for the first 100 days of the new government.
During the administration of former President Jair Bolsonaro, the billion-dollar project for the construction of the railway to transport agricultural production from the Central-South to the northern ports of the country was stalled due to environmental concerns. “We will advocate for the advancement of the country’s infrastructure within the possible environmental conditions,” said Renan Filho during presentations of priority actions for his first 100 days at the helm of the ministry.
According to Renan Filho, the ministry expects that the feasibility of granting the works of the section reaches 65%; it is currently around 58%. “About 7% of construction execution is needed to reach what I call the ‘equilibrium point’ between having or not having the viability of private investment,” he declared. According to him, the corridor should already cover section 2 of Fiol, which is located in western Bahia, and possibly section 3 of the railway, which is located in Goiás. Renan does not foresee the use of budget resources for this labor, expecting the publication of a bid for the remaining works of batch 7F of Fiol 2 in April. These works will be financed through cross investments – which were reserved by the anticipation of the renewal of the concessions.
This corridor concession is a project of the Ministry of Infrastructure that was still under the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL). On the other hand, Ferrogrão is a project that we should not consider new, as it was conceived during Dilma’s administration.

For journalists, on Wednesday (18), Renan stated that he should speak with Marina Silva so they can unlock the Ferrogão, which should open a new route for grain transportation from Mato Grosso to the ports of Pará. “From time to time, there may be some conflict.. But it is not possible to balance both things,” he added in response to a journalist who asked him how the dialogue with the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, a historical critic of the project, would be.
Today, this project is completely halted by a decision from the STF (Supreme Federal Court), following a direct action of unconstitutionality filed by PSOL. The party has been questioning the route of the railway, which was determined in provisional measures, consequently altering the boundaries of the Jamanxim National Park. Again on Wednesday (18), Renan stated that he wants to increase the railway modal to 40% of the national logistics matrix by 2035. Currently, it accounts for less than 20%.
