Piauí Is a Reference in Solar Energy Production and Accelerates Job Generation in the Region
Piauí is experiencing exponential growth in the installation of photovoltaic plants for about 4 years, serving as a reference for the rest of the country. According to the Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (ABSOLAR), the state leads in terms of installed capacity in centralized generation, including operation, construction and projects arising from auctions. According to the data, the installed capacity in Piauí reaches 989.9 MW. In second place is Ceará with 829.1 MW and Bahia in third, with 776.8 MW.
According to data from the Secretary of Mining, Oil and Renewable Energies of Piauí, the state currently hosts the largest solar park in South America, Nova Olinda, located in the municipality of Ribeira, 377 kilometers from the capital, Teresina. Along with two other parks in the cities of João Costa and São João, they produce 270 megawatts.
In operation for 2 years, the Nova Olinda plant was built with an investment of US$ 300 million by Enel Green Power in Brazil, generating 1,700 jobs, with a large part being local labor. The grandeur of the plant is summed up in 930,000 solar panels over an area of 690 hectares, with an installed capacity of 292 megawatts, capable of producing more than 600 GWh per year, enough to power 300,000 homes.
