Maersk Air Freight Will Enable a Truly Unique Combination of Integrated Air Freight with Maritime, Terrestrial, Storage, and Customs Services
Maersk announced last Friday (8) the launch of Maersk Air Cargo, the group’s air freight network, aimed at meeting global demand for integrated logistics. At the same time, the company chooses Denmark’s second largest airport, Billund, as its air freight hub for Air Cargo with daily flights, generating numerous jobs in the region. To this end, Maersk Air Cargo also announces its intention to establish an agreement with the Flight Personnel Union (FPU), which is part of the Danish Confederation and Trade Unions (FH).
According to the Global Head of Logistics and Services at A.P. Moller – Maersk, Aymeric Chandavoine, air freight provides flexibility and agility in global supply chains, allowing customers to tackle critical supply chain challenges while providing transportation options for high-value cargo.
“We firmly believe in working closely with our customers. Therefore, it is essential for Maersk to also increase our presence in the global air cargo sector by introducing Air Cargo to better meet customer needs,” he comments.

The controlled capacity of Maersk, powered by Maersk Air Cargo, is designed to make supply chain journeys more resilient and intuitive. As an independent service, Maersk Air Freight can help customers make the most of opportunities by delivering their air cargo to the right place at the right time. When combined with maritime, terrestrial, storage, and customs services, this is expected to boost the supply chain in multiple ways.
The new air freight company is the result of the existing aircraft operator, Star Air, transferring activities to Maersk Air Cargo, the new carrier that supports new and existing customers with Maersk’s end-to-end logistics. The activity transfer process received excellent support from customers, suppliers, employees, and the Danish Civil Aviation Authority.
For the Global Head of the Air and L.C. department at A.P. Moller – Maersk, Torben Bengtsson, it is an important step in Maersk Air Freight’s strategy, as it will allow the offering of a truly unique combination of integrated air freight with other modes of transport.
“We see a growing and ongoing demand for air cargo, both today and in the future, as well as an increasing demand for end-to-end logistics, which is why it is important to strengthen our own controlled capacity and further advance our air freight strategy,” Bengtsson explains.
Maersk last operated in Billund in 2005. From the mainland, Maersk Air Cargo will progressively deploy and operate a controlled capacity of five aircraft – two new B777F aircraft and three leased B767-300 cargo aircraft. Three new B767-300 freighters will also be added to the U.S.-China operation, which will initially be handled by a third-party operator. The new aircraft are expected to be operational from the second half of 2022 and until 2024.
The Billund Airport looks forward to welcoming Maersk Air Cargo, which will also support the growth of the Western Denmark business community. The airport’s CEO, Jan Hessellund, speaks of the partnership with pride. “We have seen growth, navigated the pandemic, and set a new record year for cargo in 2021. This doesn’t happen without good partners, and we do what we can to make our partners good. Now, Maersk Air Cargo is stepping onto the stage at Billund Airport and elevating it a bit. We are incredibly proud to be chosen as Maersk’s European hub for air freight and look forward to developing the collaboration to new heights.”
Maersk’s ambition is to have approximately one-third of its annual air tonnage transported within its own controlled freight network. This will be achieved through a combination of owned and leased aircraft, replicating the structure that the company has in its ocean fleet. The remaining capacity will be provided by strategic commercial carriers and charter flight operators.
Maersk Air Cargo is expected to be fully operational from the second half of 2022.
