The Situation in Kursk Worsens as Russian Forces Advance, Placing Ukrainian Troops in a Vulnerable Strategic Position

According to reports from The Guardian, the Ukrainian troops that entered the Russian region of Kursk in August are now nearly surrounded. In recent days, the military situation in the area has deteriorated rapidly.

The advance of Russian forces jeopardizes Ukraine’s supply lines and puts its troops at risk of capture or forced withdrawal.

Growing Pressure from Russian Forces

Open-source maps analyzed by experts indicate that Ukrainian troops in Kursk have been nearly split in half. The Russian counteroffensive has recovered territory and left only a narrow land corridor connecting the remaining Ukrainian soldiers to the border. In some places, this corridor is less than 500 meters wide.

The situation worsens amid the disruption of intelligence sharing between Washington and Kiev. This decision could impact Ukraine’s military strategies, reducing its ability to anticipate Russian movements.

Military Dilemma for Ukraine

Analysts assess that Kiev is facing a tough decision. Pasi Paroinen from the Black Bird Group described the situation as “very bad” for Ukrainian troops. Another expert, Yan Matveev, pointed out that Ukraine will have to choose between holding its position under elevated risks or retreating to preserve its troops.

Meanwhile, Russian forces are advancing in the Sumy region near the border, aiming to completely disrupt the supply flow to the Ukrainian soldiers in Kursk.

The Ukrainian military blog Deep State confirmed that about three-quarters of the Ukrainian force in Russia is now encircled or on the verge of being isolated.

Zelenskyy’s Popularity on the Rise

Despite the challenges on the battlefield, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s approval rating in Ukraine has increased by 10 percentage points.

According to a survey by the International Sociology Institute of Kiev, conducted between February 14 and March 4, confidence in Zelenskyy rose from 57% to 67%.

This increase follows disagreements between his administration and former U.S. President Donald Trump. The impact of these events on Ukrainian domestic politics remains uncertain, but the data suggest that Zelenskyy has maintained popular support even amidst military difficulties.

The situation of troops in Kursk remains one of the main challenges for the Kiev government. The coming weeks will be decisive in determining the future of the Ukrainian presence in the region and the direction of the conflict.
