The ceremony does not indicate that manufacturing has begun at that moment. The first steel cut occurred on January 9, 2026, marking the start of the industrial phase. The keel laying signifies progress towards assembling the blocks that will form the vessel, which is expected to be delivered to the Brazilian Navy in 2029.

In traditional shipbuilding, the keel functioned as the backbone placed before the other parts of the ship. Modern designs utilize modular fabrication: large sections are produced separately, equipped, and then joined together. Therefore, the ceremony now represents the placement of one of the blocks in the construction area.
The new ship had already moved beyond the exclusive design phase months prior. In January 2026, the cutting of the first plate indicated that engineering detailing, industrial planning, and logistical preparation were sufficiently advanced to begin physical manufacturing.
The keel laying does not launch the project from zero; it confirms that the structure has begun to take shape within the industrial sequence. This distinction prevents confusion among three distinct moments: steel cutting, hull assembly, and launching at sea.
Coin in Hull Preserves a Naval Construction Tradition

The coin used in the ceremony connects a technological process to a tradition upheld by shipyards and navies. The object is placed in the structure during the keel laying as a symbol of protection and good luck for the ship, its crew, and future missions.
The gesture has no mechanical function, does not reinforce the hull, and does not interfere with the vessel’s systems. Its value is ceremonial. In a project constructed with digital modeling, electronic equipment, and large steel modules, the small piece marks the moment when the structure is recognized as a unit in formation.
The Brazilian Navy has previously used this ceremony for the earlier frigates of the Tamandaré Class. In the F203, the tradition gains additional significance: the ship completes the initial set of four units contracted to renew Brazil’s escort fleet.
The coin occupies little space in the hull, but represents a shift in scale for the program. After this, the schedule still includes the joining of blocks, installation of equipment, launching, finishing, system tests, sea trials, and acceptance procedures before commissioning.
New ship will be 107 meters long and displace about 3,500 tons
The vessels of the Tamandaré Class measure 107.2 meters in length and have an approximate displacement of 3,500 tons. The Brazilian Navy reports a beam of 15.95 meters, speeds in the vicinity of 25 knots, and a range of up to 5,500 nautical miles for the class.
The new ship follows the MEKO concept, developed by the German company TKMS and adapted to Brazilian requirements. The modular configuration allows for organizing construction, integration, and future updates by sections, reducing the need to treat the entire hull as a single piece from the start of production.
The frigate will feature a flight deck and hangar for helicopters, radars, sensors, a combat management system, and armaments geared towards air defense, anti-surface, and anti-submarine operations. These features characterize the vessel as a multi-mission escort, prepared to operate alone or integrated with other naval assets.
The 107 meters describe the size, but the operational capacity depends on the integration of platform, sensors, communication, and armaments. The existence of the planned equipment does not eliminate the phases of installation, commissioning, and testing that will still take place before 2029.
Fourth frigate concludes the first batch of the Tamandaré Class
Mariz e Barros receives the designation F203 and completes the sequence initiated by the Tamandaré frigate (F200). The first unit was launched in August 2024, underwent sea trials in 2025, and was commissioned into the Fleet on April 24, 2026.
The second vessel is the Jerônimo de Albuquerque (F201), launched in August 2025 and prepared for sea trials. The third, Cunha Moreira (F202), was launched in Itajaí in June 2026. Each unit is therefore at a different stage of readiness.
The new ship should not be confused with these already launched vessels. The F203 remains in the structural phase and is expected to take to the water in 2027, ahead of the final integration and testing period. The current forecast indicates delivery to the Brazilian Navy in 2029.
Completing the first batch means finishing the initial series of four frigates, not immediately concluding all deliveries. The schedule remains staggered because launching a hull and incorporating a fully tested ship are separate events.
Production in Itajaí Brings Together the Navy, Emgepron, and Águas Azuis
The Tamandaré Class Frigates Program is led by the Brazilian Navy, managed by the Naval Projects Management Company, Emgepron, and executed by SPE Águas Azuis. The partnership includes TKMS, Embraer Defense & Security, and Atech, with construction concentrated at the Itajaí shipyard.
The arrangement distributes responsibilities among state oversight, naval engineering, platform manufacturing, and systems integration. According to the Navy, the program involves technology transfer, participation from Brazilian suppliers, and the delivery of source code for systems developed in the country, aimed at enhancing maintenance and update autonomy.
The institutional estimate points to approximately 23,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs by 2029, along with the involvement of over a thousand domestic suppliers. These figures relate to the entire program, not just the construction of the Mariz e Barros or existing positions within the shipyard.
The simultaneous manufacturing of the four units placed the shipyard at peak activity for the first batch. However, the progressive completion of each frigate alters this scenario over time, which is why employment projections should not be confused with a permanent number of vacancies.
Mariz e Barros Honors an Officer Linked to Naval History
The fourth frigate is named after Antônio Carlos de Mariz e Barros, a first lieutenant of the Imperial Navy. The officer commanded the battleship Tamandaré during the War of the Triple Alliance and died in 1866 after the ship was hit during the bombardment of Fort Itapiru.
The choice maintains the tribute pattern adopted in the class. Tamandaré, Jerônimo de Albuquerque, Cunha Moreira, and Mariz e Barros refer to figures linked to Brazil’s naval history. The designation F203, in turn, identifies the fourth position within the series that began with F200.
This historical name will coexist with systems produced more than a century and a half after the honored event. This combination of naval memory and technology is also reflected in the keel laying, where an ancient tradition is integrated into a digital and modular production line.
The tribute identifies the vessel, but its capabilities will be defined by the common design of the Tamandaré Class. The name does not indicate a different class nor alter the dimensions, purpose, or schedule set for the new ship.
Frigate to Strengthen Protection of the Blue Amazon
The Tamandaré Class units are designed to gradually replace older escorts and enhance the operational capacity of the Brazilian Navy. Among the anticipated missions are the control of maritime areas, protection of higher-value units, defense of oceanic islands, and participation in national or international operations.
The area of interest includes the Blue Amazon, a maritime space under Brazilian jurisdiction that spans approximately 5.7 million square kilometers. This region encompasses trade routes, fishing activities, natural resources, oil platforms, and other infrastructures deemed strategic.
Before fulfilling these functions, Mariz e Barros will need to go through several industrial and operational stages. The currency in the hull marks a tangible advance, but it does not equate to the completion of the frigate. The schedule anticipates launch in 2027 and delivery in 2029, contingent upon the completion of assembly and testing.
The new vessel concludes a series of four constructions while opening up a wait of years until effective operation.
