Goodbye After 4 Years: New License Plate Law Is Approved and Affects 74 Million Car and Motorcycle Drivers
If you drive, you have probably noticed that traffic laws are always changing, right? And after four years of debates and ups and downs, the new license plate law has finally been approved. This change will directly impact those behind the wheel, especially car and motorcycle drivers. But, what really changes?
What Is the New License Plate Law?
Well, here we go. In 2020, Brazil started using the famous Mercosur license plates. Remember them? That change that made everyone swap their car and motorcycle plates and left many people confused. The idea was to simplify, but the reality is that the new plates removed important information: the state and municipality of origin of the vehicle.
This generated quite a debate, especially among car and motorcycle drivers and regulatory agencies, who missed this identification. Now, with the new license plate law, this information will return. Yes, the plates will once again have the state and municipality of origin of the vehicle, which promises to greatly assist those who enforce traffic regulations (except for those registering their cars).

The Idea Is to Help Highway Police
This change came through Bill 3.214/2023, by Senator Esperidião Amin (PP-SC), which was approved in July 2023. What this law does, basically, is to bring back those pieces of information that were previously on the old plates, but were set aside with Mercosur. The idea is to help highway police and traffic agents do their job more efficiently.
And What About Car and Motorcycle Drivers?
If you are one of the millions of car and motorcycle drivers in Brazil, you might be wondering what this means for you in practice. The answer is simple: all vehicles registered from now on will have to follow the new plate model, with the state and municipality of origin included.
But, hold on, if you already have the Mercosur plates, you don’t need to rush to change them. The new law does not require an immediate swap, but it’s always good to keep an eye on upcoming regulations. Remember that, since January 2020, the old gray plates can no longer be used for new registrations? So, this new law just takes another step in that direction.
What to Expect from Here On Out?
With the new license plate law approved, now we just have to wait for the vote in the Contribution and Justice Committee (CCJ) for things to move forward. And in the meantime, those thinking of buying a car or motorcycle should be prepared for the new requirements. It’s worth remembering that these changes will still take time to be fully implemented, so it’s good to stay tuned for upcoming news.
So, the new license plate law comes to shake up the lives of millions of car and motorcycle drivers, bringing back information that many considered essential. If you are part of this group, it’s good to stay informed and prepared for what’s to come.
