Norbe IX from Foresea in the Espírito Santo Basin Receives HMH Automation Technology with CADs 2.0 and Drillers Assist, Reducing Manual Operations in the Red Zone.

The drillship Norbe IX, owned by Foresea, has just been equipped with advanced automation technology to enhance its operations in drilling oil wells in Brazil. This update involves adopting innovative solutions, such as the CADs 2.0 system and Drillers Assist, which significantly reduce manual operations in the red zone, providing greater safety for the crew on board.

In addition to automation, the integration of artificial intelligence on the Norbe IX represents a milestone in technological innovation in the offshore drilling industry. Thanks to the state-of-the-art technology deployed, operations can be performed more efficiently and safely. This technological transformation also reflects a significant advancement in increasing productivity and minimizing operational risks.

After almost two years of thorough testing and extensive planning, the Norbe IX has been equipped with a range of advanced technologies since February of this year. The full implementation of this series of technological innovations is expected to be completed by the end of the second half of 2024.

Automation and Efficiency Improvement in Operations

With these technological innovations, the Norbe IX will acquire the capability to drill oil wells much more efficiently, eliminating the need for human intervention in high-risk areas known as red zone. The new automation technology, developed in collaboration with the Norwegian manufacturer HMH, includes the Deal platform (Drilling Equipment Automation Layer) and two sophisticated operating systems – CADs 2.0 and Drillers Assist. The CADs 2.0 is responsible for the automation of drilling equipment.

Artificial Intelligence in Well Control

The Drillers Assist consists of a suite of software that uses artificial intelligence to assist the driller, the professional who oversees the well construction from a control cabin in the operational area. ‘This is a giant step for Foresea and for the Brazilian offshore drilling industry towards safer and more sustainable operations,’ says Heitor Gioppo, COO of Foresea. The automation of the Norbe IX also replaces dozens of repetitive movements previously performed manually by the driller, who will now focus on monitoring and validating the automated operations.

Enhanced Safety and Reduced Exposure

In addition to increasing precision and efficiency, this automation significantly reduces exposure to risk, minimizing the need for workers outside the operational cabin, especially in the red zone. This development ensures greater safety for the crew on board the Norbe IX. Clarisse Rodrigues, Rig Manager of the Norbe IX, emphasizes that the drillship will be a pioneer in Brazil and one of the few in the world to have fully automated operations. She compares this automation to the autopilot of a car, stating that it will enhance performance and safety.

Testing and Technology Implementation

The first tests of this innovative technology were conducted in a simulated environment in Norway in 2023. During this time, a group of engineers and technicians had their first practical experience with the technology through an advanced 3D simulator, which accurately replicates the environment and the drilling operations of the Norbe IX. Currently, the vessel is in the Espírito Santo Basin working for Petrobras. Alessandro Pasini, Foresea’s innovation manager, highlights that with automation, the need for manual operations is drastically reduced during well drilling. He also emphasizes that this technology allows for anticipating and simulating all possible scenarios, increasing the safety of operations.

Conclusion and Future Expectations

For those seeking more information about this technological revolution on the Norbe IX, there is a video available detailing the advancements and benefits: https://youtu.be/_dg1sMBDRgs. This movement not only raises the standards of efficiency and safety but also places the Brazilian offshore drilling industry at the forefront of global technological innovation.
