Pioneering Offshore Automation
Foresea, one of the leaders in the Brazilian offshore drilling market, announces a significant technological milestone for the sector. Its drilling ship Norbe IX will be equipped with an innovative operational automation technology in Brazil. This advancement represents a major leap in efficiency and safety for offshore drilling operations.
Beginning of the Automation Era in Offshore Drilling
With the initial factory tests already successfully completed, the installation of the new technology is set to start in January, with expectations to be operational in the first half of 2024. This project, which took more than two years to develop, aims to optimize performance and enhance safety in the drilling operations of Norbe IX.
“Implementing these automated solutions minimizes human error margins, allowing simulations and anticipations of various scenarios,” highlights Heitor Gioppo, COO of Foresea. This innovation positions Brazil in an even more prominent role in the deep-water oil extraction industry.

The Technology Behind the Innovation
The new technology integrates the drilling ship with the Deal platform (Drilling Equipment Automation Layer), utilizing smart modules such as Drillers Assist and CADS 2.0, developed by the Dutch company HMH. These tests were simulated in Norway, accurately replicating the operations of Norbe IX, which is operating in the Santos Basin.
Clarisse Rodrigues, Rig Manager of Norbe IX, explains that automation is comparable to an autopilot system, significantly enhancing the performance and safety of the crew. This advancement reinforces Foresea’s position as a company that seeks constant innovation and operational responsibility.
Commitment to Excellence and Sustainability
Foresea is recognized for its modern and efficient fleet, which includes the rigs ODN I, ODN II, Norbe VI, Norbe VIII, and Norbe IX. The company is internationally certified by APIQ2, demonstrating its quality and efficiency. Its commitment to high operational performance is balanced by respect for safety, the environment, and sustainable practices aligned with ESG principles.
With the introduction of this pioneering technology, Foresea reaffirms its commitment to innovation, safety, and efficiency, preparing for future challenges and consolidating its position as a leader in offshore drilling solutions. For more information, visit www.foresea.com.
