Researchers Register Terrestrial Species Unafraid of Humans and Reinforce Concern About the Vulnerability of Isolated Ecosystems in the Amazon Forest
The discovery of a novel bird in the Amazon raises concerns as its characteristics resemble behaviors associated with the historical disappearance of the dodo. The species reinforces warnings about ecological vulnerability and the need for ongoing protection.
Record of the Species in the Divisor Mountain Range
The slate-masked tinamou was recorded in isolated areas of the Divisor Mountain Range, a mountainous region between Brazil and Peru. The bird features reddish-cinnamon plumage and a dark stripe across the eyes, which justifies the popular name associated with “mask.”
The team led by Luiz Morais began the search after the first sighting in October 2021 in Acre. Thus, the researchers spent nearly three years trying to locate new individuals.

When they finally observed the species, they noted that the bird walked slowly, remained calm, and surprisingly, approached the scientists. This absence of fear raises concern because, historically, the dodo disappeared after contact with humans.
Characteristics That Differentiate the New Species
Tinamous are usually discreet. However, this newly described species acts in the opposite manner. Additionally, its vocalizations are long and progressive, with an echo that complicates the identification of direction.
The scientific name Tinamus resonans reflects this unique reverberation, as the song extends through the forest and gradually rises during emission.
Ecological Context and Restricted Distribution
The discovery is considered historic as it may represent the first new tinamou species from the forest described in about 75 years. Thus, the record highlights the importance of the Divisor Mountain Range as an area with biodiversity that remains poorly studied.
The species is estimated to have a population of around 2,000 individuals, all restricted to a limited altitude. Thus, the region functions as a “celestial island”, as it encompasses highly specific microhabitats.
As a result, any changes in the environment are likely to directly impact the species’ survival, especially because the top of the mountain range does not allow for an escape route in the face of climate change.
Environmental Risks Threatening the Species
Wildfires represent a significant threat, as the sandy soils are sensitive and can be compromised by a single event. Additionally, infrastructure proposals, such as a transcontinental highway and railway, may accelerate deforestation in areas of the Amazon.
Although the area is protected by a national park, political proposals seek to relax the level of protection, which concerns researchers.
Parallels with the Dodo and Conservation Lessons
Although there is no evolutionary relationship between the species, the similar behavior draws attention. Thus, both the dodo and the slate-masked tinamou are ground-dwelling birds that do not show fear of humans, which increases risks in vulnerable environments.
Additionally, the phenomenon known as “the escalator of extinction” describes the situation of animals that already occupy the highest point of their habitat and cannot advance to cooler areas.
Therefore, the new species highlights a central warning: isolated and vulnerable species may disappear if conservation is not treated as an absolute priority.
