Additionally, the driver is also allowed to make the return trip to their city of origin, provided they are transporting the same passengers.
This means that when making a one-way trip, the taxi driver can take advantage of continuing the same ride and return to their city with the same passengers, eliminating the need to make the empty return trip, which is an important economic advantage for drivers.
Shared Rides: The End Of Exclusivity In Rides
Another significant change anticipated by the new law concerns shared rides, a concept that has thus far been restricted in many places.
Traditionally, for a taxi to transport more than one person, it was necessary for the passengers to be going to the same destination and to have a connection, such as being friends, coworkers, or family members.
However, the new law opens the possibility for passengers who do not know each other to share a ride, as long as the driver informs the intention to carry out a shared ride in advance.
The impact of this is significant, as passengers will be able to share the cost of rides, which can make trips more accessible for everyone.
The exact regulation on how this notification will be given, however, still depends on decisions from the relevant authorities, but the idea is for the communication to be clear and objective.
In other words, passengers will need to know before the trip that they are embarking on a shared ride.
What Motivated These Changes In The Taxi Law?
These changes are the result of legislative proposals that have been in progress since 2017.
Federal deputy Marx Beltrão (Progressistas-AL) was one of the main proponents of the proposal, and he believes that these changes are essential to ensure equality among different types of transport.
With the popularization of app-based transport services, such as Uber and 99, which already allow shared rides, the deputy argues that taxis should also be able to offer this type of service to users.
“It is, above all, a matter of equality”, stated Beltrão.
For him, updating the Taxi Law is necessary so that the taxi sector does not fall behind, as the collective and individual transport market has evolved with new technologies and behavioral changes.
The Impact For Drivers And Passengers: What To Expect?
If these changes are approved by the Senate and sanctioned by the president, the transport dynamics in Brazil will change.
