The Plan B of Maringá – PR in Case of Oxygen Shortage Is the Creation of a New Plant in the Coming Months

The city hall of Maringá – PR, a municipality in the state of Paraná (PR), will have a new oxygen plant to combat Covid-19. It is estimated that the plant will be ready in two months and will have the capacity to produce 40 thousand m3 of the input. The Municipal Hospital, which consumed 20 thousand m3, increased its demand sixfold. The oxygen reserve fell this past weekend, and the factory responsible for supplying the municipality needed to bring in an emergency stock from Telêmaco Borba. Fifteen days ago, at the beginning of this month, the health complex received two generators. Now, there are four of these devices, which ensures the operation of the units for five days in case of a power outage in the city.

The First Measures to Be Taken in Case of Possible Oxygen Shortage

Installing a new tank to store oxygen will be the first step at the HM. A bidding process will also be opened for the construction of the plant in PR, thus Maringá will produce its own oxygen.

The tank will be installed immediately, and the company that supplies oxygen, which is from Telêmaco Borba, has committed to increasing the product supply.

“The company that supplies the Municipal Hospital assured us that it is capable of maintaining the supply even with the increases we have seen in consumption. This product is manufactured in Telêmaco Borba and is brought here to supply our system. A second cylinder should be built, so we will have a reserve of 20 thousand cubic meters of oxygen for the hospital,” he stated.

Increase in Consumption in PR Due to Covid-19

Communication Secretary Marcos Cordiolli states that in February the demand was 120 thousand cubic meters, and the forecast is to reach 150 thousand cubic meters this month.

Mayor Ulisses Maia explains, “Our priority is to prevent the spread of the virus, but we are vigilant to welcome the population with all the necessary conditions for the best possible care.”

The Self-sufficiency of PR Hospitals with the Creation of a New Plant

PR already had an oxygen plant in the small city of São Miguel do Iguaçu, located in the western region of PR. Inaugurated in 2017, the production of input by the plant has allowed Hospital Madre de Dio to achieve self-sufficiency in oxygen since then.

This autonomy makes a huge difference in times of crisis like the one we are experiencing.
