New Hyundai HB20 Spotted Testing in São Paulo Coast and Expected to Debut in 2026 with a New Platform, Larger Size, New Safety Features, and SUV-Inspired Design. Model Promises Repositioning in the Compact Segment.

The new generation Hyundai HB20 was spotted testing in the “Calotas Mountain Range,” a mountainous stretch in Ubatuba (SP), and is expected to debut in the Brazilian market in 2026.

The images show a camouflaged prototype, indicating that the project is advancing through the final stages of mechanical validation and chassis adjustment.

The expectation is that the national hatch will gain a new platform, larger dimensions, an expanded safety package, and a design inspired by recent models from the brand.

Spotting in Ubatuba and Launch Forecast

The records made on the North Coast of São Paulo add to other recent sightings and indicate that Hyundai has intensified tests on ascents, curves, and braking under mountainous conditions.

According to the product schedule hinted at by automotive publications, the arrival in stores is projected for 2026, maintaining production in Piracicaba (SP), where the current line is manufactured.

New Platform and Industrial Partnership

Unlike previous generations, which retained the technical base launched in 2012, the new HB20 will adopt a completely new architecture.

This change is connected to the agreement announced in August 2025 between Hyundai and General Motors for the joint development of five vehicles for the Americas, with Hyundai leading the compact projects.

The plan estimates a combined production of over 800,000 units annually when all lines are mature.

Size and Interior Space

With the new base, the hatch is expected to grow and approach 4.10 meters in length, with a wheelbase of about 2.55 to 2.58 m, an advancement over the current model of 4.015 m and 2.53 m.

The increase in dimensions is likely to benefit rear accommodation and trunk volume, which is currently 300 liters in the current generation.

Design Inspired by Kona and i20

Even under disguise, it is noticeable that the surfaces are cleaner and the proportions are robust.

Studio projections and reports from the automotive press indicate narrow LED headlights forming an “H” shape and a rear with a “C” pillar reminiscent of the i20, as well as angular taillights.

The design aligns with what the brand has been applying in SUVs like Kona and Santa Fe, with a striking light signature.

Interior and Embedded Technologies

Inside, the trend is toward a dashboard with a “plank” appearance, integrating the instrument cluster and multimedia into a single piece, a solution already seen in recent Hyundai models.

Materials and textures are expected to evolve, and higher trims should incorporate driving assistants in line with the package offered in the Creta — such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous braking, and lane-keeping assist.

Engines and Gearboxes

Under the hood, the HB20 is expected to maintain the current range of flex engines: 1.0 Naturally Aspirated (80 hp and 10.2 kgfm) in the entry-level versions and 1.0 Turbo (up to 120 hp and 17.5 kgfm) in the more equipped configurations.

The combination with five-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic transmission is also expected to continue, preserving a well-established setup in the country.

End of HB20S and Arrival of Compact SUV

The lineup is expected to undergo restructuring.

Industry publications indicate that the HB20S, the sedan variant, will be phased out to make way for a compact SUV derived from the HB20 project and positioned below the Creta.

This new utility vehicle will compete in the market with the Fiat Pulse, Renault Kardian, and the recently launched Volkswagen Tera, which is currently a central piece of VW’s offensive in the segment.

Safety and Driving Dynamics

In addition to stability and traction controls, which are already mandatory in various markets, the top versions are expected to receive sensors and cameras to assist driving, blind-spot monitoring, and rear traffic alerts.

The evolution of the platform is expected to enhance dynamic refinement, with suspension and steering calibrated for greater stability in curves and better absorption of irregularities, something essential for use on urban and highway surfaces.

What the Spottings Have Already Shown

Despite the heavy camouflage, the side glass area and body elements reveal the profile of the HB20, as seen in the prototype that climbed the São Paulo mountain range.

The more pronounced size is noticeable in the relationship between overhangs and wheelbase, and the body appears to have a larger distance between columns, indicating an improvement in rear space.

These details support the repositioning of the hatch within the compact segment.

Production and Schedule

Hyundai maintains its compact vehicle operation in Piracicaba (SP), and the new generation is expected to follow the route of localization.

While the official schedule has not been released, the routine of public road testing and the 2026 window reported by specialized outlets support the proximity of the commercial debut.

There are still pending points for confirmation by the manufacturer, such as final design details, the closed list of versions, and the possible replacement of the spare tire with a repair kit — a change that, if it occurs, could slightly increase the trunk capacity.

The official disclosure should clarify these items as the launch approaches.

Which of these expected advancements — new platform, ADAS package, more interior space, or maintenance of the 1.0 turbo — weighs most in your buying decision?
