With A Billion-Dollar Investment In Its Factory In Pernambuco, Stellantis Prepares To Launch The New Compass For 2027 With Mild Hybrid Technology
Jeep is about to launch its awaited national hybrid Compass, but the big surprise is that the technology used will be different from what the public imagines. The first national hybrid from Jeep, to be mass-produced in Pernambuco, will not be a plug-in model. Stellantis’ bet is on mild hybrid technology — simpler and cheaper — to escape the high prices that condemned its first imported model and thus compete directly with the competition.
This decision is part of a profound transformation of the Goiana factory, which received an investment of R$ 13 billion to become the company’s electrification hub in South America. The success of the new Compass, with a launch scheduled for early 2027, will depend on an aggressive pricing strategy to face the established competition from Chinese SUVs and the brand’s ability to communicate the benefits of its new technology.
The Investment of R$ 13 Billion, The New Era Of The Jeep Factory In Pernambuco
Stellantis is not entering the hybrid race by choice, but by necessity. The company saw the market dominated by Toyota and its hybrids and, at the same time, was overwhelmed by the invasion of Chinese electric cars from BYD and GWM. To not fall behind, the company announced a R$ 13 billion investment in its Automotive Hub in Goiana, Pernambuco, to be applied by 2030.

Ambev has planted over 3 million trees and restored an area equivalent to the coastline from São Paulo to Natal, and the result after 15 years of silent investment has finally appeared for all of Brazil to see.
The focus of the investment is the implementation of the new STLA Medium global platform. This modern and flexible architecture will serve as the foundation not only for the new Compass but also for the future generation of the Peugeot 3008, which will be produced on the same assembly line, generating immense economies of scale.
How The Mild Hybrid Engine Of The National Compass Will Work

This is where the main difference between expectation and reality lies. The technology that will be manufactured in Goiana for the first national hybrid from Jeep is a 48V mild hybrid system, dubbed “Bio-Hybrid e-DCT.”
In practice, this means you won’t be able to plug the car in. Think of the Bio-Hybrid system as a ‘personal assistant’ to the combustion engine: a small electric motor helps with acceleration for more agility and allows the engine to shut off in certain situations to save fuel. It is an intelligent assistant, not a primary engine. It allows the combustion engine to turn off in traffic stops or at cruising speed and gives an extra torque boost during accelerations.
Launch In 2027, Why Is The Compass Coming One Year After The Technology?
The Stellantis schedule indicates that the first car with Bio-Hybrid technology will leave the Goiana factory in 2026. However, everything suggests that this will not be the new Compass. The most likely bet is that the MHEV system will debut in an already produced model, like the Fiat Toro, to introduce the technology to the market.
The new generation of the Jeep Compass, already based on the new STLA Medium platform, is scheduled for launch in early 2027. It will arrive equipped with the mild hybrid system, which by then will already be more established in the market.
The Lesson Of R$ 100 Thousand, The Failure Of The Imported Hybrid That Defined The Strategy For The National
The decision for a simpler and cheaper hybrid system was a hard-learned lesson. In April 2022, Jeep launched the Compass 4xe in Brazil, the imported plug-in hybrid version from Italy. The price was prohibitive: R$ 349,990.
Sales were a failure. The model became a “headache” for the brand, which had to apply discounts of nearly R$ 100,000 to clear the stock. The experience made it clear that Brazilian consumers are not willing to pay such a high price for a hybrid Compass, forcing Stellantis to opt for a more affordable technology for the national model.
The SUV War, How Will The Compass 2027 Compete?
The new MHEV Compass will enter a much more competitive market, dominated by models like the BYD Song Plus and the GWM Haval H6. Without being able to compete in electric range or power, Jeep’s strategy for its national hybrid will have to rely on other pillars.
The bet will be on the strength of the Jeep brand, its aspirational design, and especially the reach of its vast dealer network, an important differential over the Chinese brands. However, to succeed, the decisive factor will be price. The first national hybrid from Jeep will have the tough task of convincing consumers that, in this case, less technology for a lower price may be the smartest choice.
