Pernambuco Energy Company (Celpe) Should Start This Year the Project to Install a Solar Power Plant at the Women’s Hospital of Recife (HMR).
The solar power plant of CELPE will have five systems of 60 kilowatt peak (kWp) and two of 10kWp, totaling an installed capacity of 320kWp. The expectation is that the generation will promote an annual saving of 536.7 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity.

Developed by the Secretary of Environment and Sustainability and the Pelópidas Silveira City Institute, the Recife Energy Efficiency City project aims to install photovoltaic solar panels in public facilities in the areas of health, education, sports, and at the City Hall headquarters.
The Women’s Hospital was chosen as a pilot to represent the municipal model of energy efficiency and climate change mitigation, becoming self-sufficient in electricity.

Research indicates that Brazilians support clean energy and wish to advance in the energy transition, but reject paying more on their electricity bill, showing a direct conflict between cost and sustainability.
At HMR, the installation of the equipment will significantly reduce about 7,000 tCO2e emitted by the municipality. This type of energy is considered clean, as it does not release, during its production or consumption process, waste or pollutant gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect and global warming.
“The challenge of the climate crisis and sustainability has always been something we have prioritized decisively. This is an agenda that needs to bring everyone together: government, private sector, and society. So the City Hall managed to approve the project with ICLEI and international bodies, and now it comes to fruition with the support of CELPE. Sustainability is an urgent agenda, and we will continue to advance in this area,” said Mayor João Campos.
Celpe Justifies the Choice of the Hospital for the Installation of a Solar Power Plant
The works for the installation of the 725 modules of 440Wp for the solar power plant should begin this week.
The concessionaire’s intention is to deliver the plant ready and operational to the City Hall of Recife by the end of May.
“Celpe decided to install the plant at the Women’s Hospital because it understands that the institution plays a relevant role in the health and well-being of women in the city and neighboring municipalities. In addition to providing savings on the electricity bill, HMR will start consuming electricity from a clean source, thus contributing to the preservation of the environment,” said the president of Celpe, Saulo Cabral.
