Petrobras informs that it has identified hydrocarbons in exploratory well 201 km off the coast of Rio and 2,984 m deep, with indications in electric profiles, gas, and samples collected during drilling
Petrobras announced on Monday that it has made a new discovery of hydrocarbons in the deep waters of the pre-salt Campos Basin, in an exploratory well in block C-M-477.
Considered one of the main oil-producing areas in the country, the Campos Basin is located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo and concentrates a large part of national production, forming Brazil’s largest oil complex.
Where Petrobras found the indications

According to Petrobras, the substance was identified in an exploratory well drilled in the SC-AP4 sector, in block C-M-477. The area is located about 201 kilometers off the coast of the state of Rio, at a depth of 2,984 meters.

In the Saudi Arabian desert, the world’s largest green hydrogen plant is 80% complete and will use 4 gigawatts of solar and wind energy to produce 600 tons of clean fuel per day when it opens in 2027.
The state-owned company emphasized that the discovery occurred in the deep waters of the pre-salt, reinforcing the strategic relevance of the Campos Basin for Brazilian production.
How the discovery was detected
According to Petrobras, the hydrocarbons were detected through electric profiles, as well as indications of gas and fluid samples collected during the drilling process.
These signals, pointed out by the company, support the indication of the presence of hydrocarbons at the drilled location.
What happens now with the collected material
Petrobras also informed that the material will be sent for laboratory analyses, which will allow the characterization of the fluids found and, based on that, the evaluation of the area’s potential.
The laboratory stage is crucial to detail the type of fluid and better understand what the discovery may represent in terms of viability and next steps.
Who operates block C-M-477
Currently, Petrobras operates block C-M-477 with 70% participation. The British oil company BP holds the remaining 30%.
This participation model defines the operation and exploration rights in the block where the new indication was identified.
Recent discovery in Marlim Sul also in the Campos Basin
At the end of March, Petrobras had already reported a discovery of oil described as of excellent quality in the Marlim Sul field, in the pre-salt Campos Basin.
At that time, the presence of oil was identified in the exploratory well 3-BRSA-1397-RJS, drilled 113 kilometers off the coast of Campos dos Goytacazes, at a depth of 1,178 meters. The Marlim Sul field is 100% operated by Petrobras.
What are hydrocarbons, according to the base
Hydrocarbons are organic compounds formed exclusively by atoms of carbon and hydrogen, serving as the basis of organic chemistry. They are the main components of oil and natural gas and have wide use as fuels and in the production of plastics, paraffins, and solvents.
In your view, can this new discovery by Petrobras in the Campos Basin become a relevant project, or is it still too early to measure the real potential of the area?
