The Gasoline to Be Produced by Petrobras Will Have New Specifications, with Quality Similar to Fuel Produced in the USA and Europe.

According to Anelise Lara, Director of Refining and Gas at Petrobras, during a live event of the Brazilian Automotive Engineering Association held last night (06/23), Brazil will produce gasoline with quality similar to the fuel sold in Europe and the USA in the next semester. Starting in August, new specifications at Petrobras refineries will take effect. With this, the price of fuel will increase. Among the advantages, according to the management, are reduced consumption and better vehicle performance.

Anelise emphasized that Petrobras refineries are already prepared to meet the new gasoline quality regulation, approved in January by the National Petroleum Agency (ANP).

“Petrobras is ready to produce this new gasoline. The new specification is welcome and will bring the quality of fuel sold in Brazil closer to that of the American and European markets. The intrinsic quality of gasoline will increase in terms of octane and specific mass, which means a more efficient fuel and better protection for vehicle engines. This will allow for a reduction in gasoline consumption per kilometer traveled,” says Anelise Lara.

Petrobras Will Conduct Tests for Renewable Diesel in Paraná

The director also stated that the economic feasibility of renewable diesel — a technology patented by Petrobras that allows for the production of the derivative from the coprocessing of oil with vegetable oils at refineries — will depend on the regulation of the new product.

Petrobras, along with ANP, hopes that the commercialization of green diesel, which will begin to be tested at the Repar refinery in Araucária (PR) starting in July, can generate carbon credits (Cbios) — an instrument of the federal RenovaBio program for the offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions. Each CBio corresponds to the reduction of emissions of 1 ton of carbon resulting from the substitution of fossil fuel consumption with renewable sources.

“For [green diesel and aviation bio-kerosene] to be economically viable, they need to be regulated. This is the most relevant point for us to proceed with the production of green diesel,” the executive stated during the online event.

The RenovaBio sets emission targets for each fuel distributor, which must acquire CBios from renewable fuel producers.
